Foothills County senior killed in single-vehicle rollover

Foothills RCMP responded to a fatal rollover between Priddis and Millarville on Thursday morning.

The single-vehicle incident happened on Plummers Road, just before 10 a.m.

Police responded and STARS Air Ambulance was dispatched shortly after 10.

The driver, an 81-year-old Millarville resident, was pronounced deceased on scene.

Town of High River warns of carnival ticket scam

The Town of High River is cautioning locals of a suspected scam relating to this weekend's Wild Rose Carnival.

According to a Facebook post from the town, there have been reports of discounted ride tickets for the carnival being offered on social media.

According to the town, tickets will only be available on-site at the event.

RCMP urges fugitive Elijah Strawberry to surrender as manhunt continues

A brief update was given on the investigation surrounding a shooting that happened in Wheatland County on August 6.

Staff Sergeant Mark Wielgosz with the Strathmore RCMP said that police will be giving daily updates to keep the public informed about the investigation, which led to the death of Rocky View County employee Colin Hough, and the injury of a FortisAlberta employee.

'Freedom Convoy' organizer Chris Barber's lawyers make final arguments

Defence lawyers making final arguments on behalf of one of the prominent "Freedom Convoy" organizers are maintaining their client's innocence, with proceedings scheduled to continue next week.

Diane Magas argued before a judge Thursday that her client, Chris Barber, never meant to gridlock Ottawa and that he is not responsible for the actions of convoy participants.

She also said there's an "enormous" amount of material to deal with in the trial and the process has taken more time than expected. The trial began in September 2023 and has faced a number of delays.

Biosecurity a critical part of farming operations

Biosecurity is an important part of any farming operation with ranchers having to take special care for their own farm systems.

That can include managing disease risks wherever they pop up, including from outside sources.

Foothills County is filled with wildfire smoke, causing an Air Quality alert

Due to the wildfire smoke in the area, there is an Air Quality Alert for Foothills County.

This advisory includes De Winton, Okotoks, Aldersyde, and High River.

The wildfire smoke is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility, both of which can change significantly from hour to hour and over short distances.

Canada must respond to mpox crisis in Africa to prevent spread here, experts say

The World Health Organization's declaration of mpox as a global public health emergency means Canada must do its part to help stem outbreaks of the virus in Africa, experts say. 

"Where there is a fire, we all put it out quickly and the whole village is safe. If you allow one house to burn in a village, sooner or later that fire is coming for you," said Dr. Madhukar Pai, Canada Research Chair in epidemiology and global health at McGill University in Montreal.

Gallery: The Rolling Barrage returns to Okotoks for sixth consecutive year

The Rolling Barrage passed through Okotoks on Wednesday.

The annual cross-Canada procession of motorcycles was started in 2017 as a fundraiser and awareness event in support of members of the Canadian Armed Forces, veterans, and first responders living with PTSD.

It first made its way to Okotoks in 2019 and has continued to do so every year since.

The riders arrived at about 6:45, proceeding up Northridge Drive and eventually hosting a reception at The George.
