Calgary's Chanse Vigen sets new chuckwagon track record at the Ponoka Stampede

Chanse Vigen, who now calls Calgary home, lit up the track Thursday night at the prestigious Ponoka Stampede.

Vigen and his wagon crossed the finish line in a time of 1.11.75, breaking Luke Tournier's 2011 time of 1.12.19.

High River's Jason Glass finished in 13th, Dayton Sutherland from DeWinton came in 24th while Blackie's Jordie Fike came in 36th out of 36th after suffering a 10 second penalty for his wagon missing a barrel.

Holy Crowson! The Dawgs destroyed the Lethbridge Bulls scoring over 20 runs

The Okotoks Dawgs unleashed their scoring prowess last night in Lethbridge, absolutely destroying the Bulls 24-2.

Yes, 24 to 2 was the final score.

Connor Crowson led the charge, going 4 for 4 at the plate. He drove in 7 RBIs, crossed the plate five times, and was walked twice.

Austin Eaton got the win on the mound, going 6 innings while striking out 4 players and giving up 3 hits.

With the win, the Dawgs moved back into first place in the WCBL West Division, just a half game up on the Bulls.

Update: Lethbridge Police have found missing teenager

The Lethbridge Police have located the missing teenager from earlier this week.

They had reported the teenager was last seen in the morning of June 23, and their efforts to locate her were unsuccessful.

There had been concerns for her well-being.

On June 26, the Lethbridge Police took to Facebook to let the public know that the teenager had been located.

 

It's going to be a sunny weekend in the Foothills, and there is a lot to do ahead of Canada Day

Unlike last weekend, it's going to be sunny all weekend, giving people a chance to get outdoors.

Over at the Environmental Education Centre, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., curious kids will learn all about bears as part of their Nature Fridays. They will dive into bear facts and learn about the bears that call Canada home.

Tears of joy and relief were shed by Highwood High grads, parents and other family members on Thursday.

The annual graduation ceremony started just after 10 a.m. at the Museum of the Highwood as students lined up for their traditional photo.

Then the grads marched to George Lane Memorial Park for the ceremony at 11. 

Over 600 people packed the area around the gazebo for the ceremony.

The weather was perfect, perhaps a bit too sunny, as some parents and family were sporting some sunburns after the almost 90-minute ceremony.

Federal Court approves Indian Hospitals class-action settlement

The Federal Court has approved a multi-billion-dollar class-action settlement for people who suffered abuse at federally run 'Indian hospitals' following out-of-court negotiations between Ottawa and Indigenous survivors.

The federal government ran 33 such hospitals between 1936 and 1981. The total compensation amount is expected to be between $3 billion and $5.3 billion.

A 49-year-old Canadian has died while in ICE custody in Florida

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Thursday that a 49-year-old Canadian has died while in its custody.

A detainee death notice from the agency, commonly known as ICE, said that Johnny Noviello was pronounced dead by the Miami Fire Rescue Department at 1:36 p.m. on June 23.

The agency said he was found unresponsive at 12:54 p.m. at a federal detention centre where he was being held pending deportation proceedings. Medical staff attempted CPR and defibrillation but were unsuccessful, the agency said.

New project planned for long-vacant McRae Street lot

The empty lot on McRae Street may not be empty much longer.

Signs promoting a new development called "The Station", from Cornerstone Homes, recently appeared on the long-vacant corner property.

"It's been an empty space for years and years," said Cornerstone president Justin Dallaire. "There have been plans before that didn't move forward, so we're really excited to bring something meaningful to the site."

Alberta company at the centre of allegations on health contracts urges audit release

An Alberta company swept up in allegations of government corruption says it’s being further harmed by the suppression of a report it believes could clear the name of its CEO.

Medical supply company MHCare Medical is calling on the provincial government to release an audit initiated by Alberta’s former head of health services into certain health contracts.

Calgary police say charges laid after 11-year-old boy hit by transit train

Calgary police say charges have been laid after an 11-year-old boy was hit earlier this year by a light-rail train car.

Officers say the boy was walking in a marked crosswalk at Banff Trail Station in mid-April when the CTrain entered the station.

The pedestrian barriers weren't down, and the train struck the boy, who was treated in hospital for life-threatening injuries.

They also said the driver of the train was arrested.

Police say the 60-year-old train operator has since been charged with dangerous operation causing bodily harm.
