School’s out for summer in Airdrie—so what happens to school and playground zones?
As the school year ends for Airdrie students, DiscoverAirdrie reached out to local RCMP to clarify what speed limits apply in school and playground zones over the summer.
“The posted limits around schools are in effect when school is in session including PD days [professional development days],” Airdrie RCMP said in a written response. “Once summer holidays begin school zones revert to the regular speed limit unless otherwise indicated.”
When asked how drivers should navigate unclear signage, RCMP advised taking no chances.

Alberta panel member says ask Premier Smith about idea to cut aid to some newcomers
A key member of Alberta's new panel fighting federal overreach says Canada's immigration system needs fixing, but couldn't comment on the panel considering an idea to cut supports for some newcomers.
Business Council of Alberta president Adam Legge says questions about potentially excluding certain immigrants from services like health care should be addressed to Premier Danielle Smith.
Barring services to some newcomers is a solution being put forward on immigration on the panel's website.
Airdrie's Main Street signals go live, more construction to follow
New traffic signals at Towerlane Drive and Elk Hill are expected to be operational today, part of a wider slate of summer roadwork that includes lane closures, pathway detours and full road reconstruction across Airdrie.
The city says the Towerlane signal will replace the mid-block pedestrian crossing near ATB, with landscaping and curb repairs to follow. The signal upgrade comes ahead of a major rebuild of Main Street between Elk Hill and Erin Drive, set to begin in early July.

AI voice scam mimics officials, RCMP shares warning for Albertans
The Alberta RCMP is sharing a federal cybersecurity warning about AI-generated voice scams impersonating senior officials and public figures.
The warning, shared Tuesday on RCMP Alberta’s social media channels, follows a joint federal advisory issued Monday by the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS) and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). Authorities say a malicious campaign is targeting Canadians—particularly executives and senior public servants—with fraudulent calls and messages designed to steal money and personal information.
Alberta Next survey asks if province should withhold social services for immigrants
Whether Alberta should withhold social services from immigrants is among the issues Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is tabling for debate this summer when she travels the province to consult citizens on potential referendum questions.
The tour is part of what Smith has dubbed the "Alberta Next" panel. At a news conference Tuesday, she announced details of its work and named its 15 members.
At the same time, six online surveys were launched on the panel's website, which are to help inform what questions the government puts to a referendum next year.
Steady May inflation figures don't make the case for rate cuts: economists
May inflation figures showed marginal improvements in some of the Bank of Canada's closely watched price figures — a step in the right direction, some economists say, but likely not enough to convince the central bank to cut interest rates.
The annual pace of inflation held steady at 1.7 per cent last month as cooling shelter costs helped tame price pressures, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.
Crime bill with tougher bail, sentencing provisions coming in fall: justice minister
The Liberal government will table a bill this fall introducing stricter bail conditions and sentencing for some crimes, particularly those involving organized crime, human trafficking, home invasion and car theft, Justice Minister Sean Fraser said in an interview.
"It's perhaps obvious, given the tenor around the criminal justice system, that reforms are in order," Fraser told The Canadian Press.
Original BGC Airdrie building demolished, new facility coming soon
On Monday, the original BGC Airdrie Club building was torn down, with a new building on the way.
Denisa Sanness, the Executive Director with the BGC Airdrie Club, explained this was the original site for the Airdrie Boys and Girls Club when they first opened their doors in 1979.
"The plan is that we are building a new building. It will be placed on the site. The building will be able to support children for the next 50 years. So it will be a beautiful addition to the community, and it'll help us to continue supporting children and youth in Airdrie."
