Thunderstorms loom as smoke lingers over Airdrie

 

Showers and thunderstorm risk are expected in Airdrie through Saturday, while local smoke and wind gusts up to 40 km/h remain possible on Thursday.

According to Environment Canada’s Thursday morning forecast, Airdrie faces a 30 per cent chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorms Thursday afternoon. Local smoke is expected to linger in the evening. The agency predicts a 60 per cent chance of showers again on Friday, with possible thunderstorms and a high of 21 C.

Update: Airdrie drivers: Collision stalls northbound Deerfoot near Airport Trail

Northbound Deerfoot Trail traffic slowed to a crawl Thursday morning after a collision near Airport Trail NE blocked the left-hand lane, though the scene has since been cleared. 

The incident occurred between Beddington Trail and Airport Trail, according to 511 Alberta, which reported lane closures, no passing, speed reductions and significant congestion in the area. Drivers were advised to expect delays and use caution.

Rocky View boosts fire staffing ahead of G7 Summit; more road closures this weekend

 

Rocky View County Fire Services "will continue normal operations during the G7 Summit, with a temporary increase in staffing at the Springbank Fire Station," officials said Wednesday.

The measure is being taken "as a precaution to ensure readiness for any potential increase in emergency response along Highway 1," the county said in a June 11 notice published on its website.

Cybersecurity, AI training key focus for Rocky View Schools technology team

At the latest Rocky View Schools (RVS) Board of Trustees meeting, the trustees received an update from the RVS Technology for Learning Department.

The department provides devices and technology support to approximately 29,200 students and more than 3,000 staff members.

"The department maintains up-to-date technology at the network, client and user level and is committed to ensuring these are secure and reliable through monitoring of application and system performance," shared RVS.

Métis cultural residency creates connection at Hugh Sutherland School

Students at Hugh Sutherland School (HSS) in Carstairs have gained a deeper understanding of Métis heritage and culture following a recent Indigenous cultural residency at the school.

According to Chinook's Edge School Division, the residency was one of five cultural residencies underway in Chinook’s Edge schools this year.

"During the week of May 19, HSS students participated in a number of activities led by Shauna Taylor, mother of HSS teacher Tim Taylor, and Marvin Goodon, Shauna’s father and Tim’s grandfather. Both are Métis."

Protests at G7 summit in Alberta set to be largely peaceful, targeting Trump policies

Protests during the upcoming G7 leaders summit in Kananaskis, Alta., may be starkly different than demonstrations happening this week against immigration crackdowns in the United States.

A University of Toronto research group that has been monitoring the meetings of world leaders since 1998 says its analysis shows Canadian protests are more peaceful and smaller.

But similar to the recent demonstrations in Los Angeles, they're likely to be against the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump.

More surgeries performed but wait times still longer than before pandemic, study says

The Canadian Institute for Health Information says more surgeries are being performed than before the pandemic — but wait times have still grown longer. 

The report released Thursday looked at wait times for hip and knee replacements, cataract procedures, cancer surgeries, MRIs and CT scans in 2019 and in 2024.
