What’s behind your seasonal allergies: Causes, symptoms, and how to cope

After a long winter, many people look forward to the spring weather. However, the season can bring some adverse reactions, as many people experience seasonal allergies that develop at the same time every year. 

In a written response, Medical Health Officer for the Saskatchewan Health Authority, Dr. Stanley Enebeli, explains that these symptoms are caused by exposure to pollens from trees, grasses, or weeds. The amount and type of pollen in the air can vary depending on the season, however, pollen count is typically higher in the warmer months. 

Province adding drugs and drug paraphernalia to street weapon act to open new enforcement options

The provincial government is introducing amendments to add drugs and drug paraphernalia as street weapons. The amendment will apply to The Safe Public Spaces (Street Weapons) Act, expanding it to include fentanyl, hypodermic needles, and methamphetamine.  

The province says making the change would help to recognize the risks these items present to public safety. These amendments are a part of the government's plan to protect communities from illicit fentanyl and methamphetamine production, transportation, trafficking, and street use in the province.

Poilievre promises to end ban on single-use plastic straws, Liberals to release full platform Saturday

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre promised to strike down a key element of the Liberal government's environmental policy Friday as he and other party leaders got back on the campaign trail following the national leaders' debates in Montreal.

The campaigning Friday also coincided with the opening of the first of four days of advance polling across the country.

Both Poilievre and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh stayed in Quebec to make announcements Friday morning, while Liberal Leader Mark Carney made his way to Niagara Falls, Ont.

Roots of tomorrow: Canada's forests need our support

On this Earth Day, the significance of forests for conservation, community benefits and human health has never been more urgent to acknowledge. Forests play many critical roles for nature and people: they provide habitat for hundreds of species, act as water filters, reduce air pollution, and are places of community connection, recreation and refuge. They regulate temperature and weather patterns and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Prairie Sky Collective continues with its busy spring agenda of activities and seminars for community members.  

Over the past couple of weeks, a number of events have taken place. On April 9, Dr. Megan Parker of It Starts With Nature Health Clinic conducted a presentation on women’s hormonal health which drew a substantial turnout of 25 registrants.  

Supreme Court of Canada clarifies treatment of student loan debt under bankruptcy law

The Supreme Court of Canada says a person must wait seven years after completely finishing their post-secondary studies before they can be released from student loan debt under the federal bankruptcy law.

The top court's decision came Thursday in the case of Izabela Piekut, who received government student loans in the course of three university programs from 1987 to 2003.

Piekut later returned to school and earned a master's degree in 2009 without the help of additional student loans.

'You, sir, are not a change': Party leaders target Carney in final election debate

Liberal Leader Mark Carney spent his first English election debate presenting himself as a safe pair of hands for a country in crisis — while Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre sought to frame him as more of the same after a decade of Liberal government.

Carney, who is leading in the polls, became the main target of all his rivals' attacks early in Thursday's final debate of the election — a trend that carried over from Wednesday's French language debate.

Protective Services report from March

During Wednesday's City Council's Executive Meeting in Humboldt, the City's Protective Services stats from March were discussed. 

 From the local RCMP detachment, there was an increase of reported incidents for March with 119 compared to February with 104. 

 Traffic charges decreased last month with nine incidents as opposed to 21 from the previous month. This was also a sharp decrease from March of 2024 when there were 42 traffic charges.  

Advance polls open on Friday

With the Federal election slated for Monday, April 28, residents can cast their ballots in the upcoming days at the advance polls.  

In Humboldt, the advance poll will be at the Legion Hall located 324 Main Street.
