SRSS Grad Fashion Show comes back after two-year hiatus

The SRSS Grad Fashion Show took place on Thursday evening after a two-year hiatus due to COVID restrictions. 

Kaleigh Henrikson from Applied Commerce at SRSS says it was a great feeling seeing everything go back to normal this year. 

Many students recognize the fashion show as the kickoff to the grad festivities.

MCC hosting events to help victims of abuse

Val Hiebert from MCC Canada says they have emerging research showing that intimate partner abuse and child abuse have both gone up during COVID lockdowns. 

They will be hosting a few events this month about domestic abuse and the effects you can experience if you were abused in childhood. 

They are hosting these events to be able to assist victims through their journey of healing. 

Smile Cookie Campaign raises over $20,000 for YFC

The Smile Cookie Campaign with Tim Horton's sold over 23,000 cookies this time around. 

$23,135 was raised and given to Youth for Christ Steinbach. 

Rueben Singh from YFC says the fundraiser was a huge success. 

"Very successful. One of the most successful around here actually, we ended up selling 23,000 cookies which is incredible.” 

Young girls develop life skills and serve the community

The Mitchell Girl Guides is a program for young girls. It lets them develop life skills and is a great place to make friends. 

Teresa Mistelbacher was a Girl Guide as a child. She did the first three levels: Sparks (ages 5-6), Brownies (ages 7-8), and then Guides (ages 9-11). 

She is now leading a group of Girl Guides, as her daughter Autumn wanted to try it out.  

Rotary Club hosts luncheon in support of D.A.R.E. program

The South Eastman Rotary Club’s annual fundraiser supporting D.A.R.E. took place yesterday at MHV. 

It’s been a couple of years since they’ve been able to come together to support the D.A.R.E. program. 

Krista Friesen from South Eastman Rotary Club says they were very excited to be able to have an in-person event again. 

More than 5000 riders get schooled in bus safety

This past week was School Bus Safety Week, and Rebecca Melnyk, a bus driver with HSD for 19 years, taught the children all about bus safety. This year’s theme was Safely Rolling To My Destination.

She says that the two most important lessons to remember from bus safety are to listen to the bus driver and stay calm. 

"I would hope that the kids just kind of stay calm, remember to listen to their driver and just be mindful of each other and then we'll all get out of the situation as quickly and safely as we can.” 

Increased thefts and break-ins in Steinbach, security experts explain how to not be the next victim

Over the last few months, there has been a dramatic increase of thefts.  

President of Steinbach Security Services Brian Brunelle suspects this is due to the rising costs of food and fuel. 

He says it is extremely important to have your door locked at all times and to only answer the door for people you recognize. 

Can I get my COVID booster and flu shot on the same day?

Scott Penner, Steinbach Pharmasave owner and pharmacist, is thankful for all the people who have stopped by Pharmasave after they just recently opened. 

“We have been open since August 31st and we're seeing new faces in the store every day and a lot of positive feedback.” 

Penner talks about this year’s flu shot and the COVID booster. He says that it’s okay to get the flu shot and COVID booster on the same day. 

Danny Plett of Steinbach releases music video of “Losing Myself in You”

Danny Plett, a musician from Steinbach, wrote quite a few songs during the pandemic, one of which is “Losing Myself in You.” 

Plett says the song is about losing yourself to the vastness and greatness of the heavenly Father. 

He tells the story behind filming the music video. 

“We went out to some country road and it was kind of sunset time, and the light was really cool and the mosquitoes were unbelievable.”
