DUI, suspicious behaviour among Friday, Saturday EPS matters

Suspicious behaviour, impaired driving, and fights were among the weekend’s activity reported by the Estevan Police Service. 

Here is the EPS’ full report of Saturday calls:

Police received a report of a fight on a parking lot in the city core.  Upon attending to the area, no one was located.

A call from a confused individual was also received.  Police and EMS personnel attended and upon locating her, she was transported to hospital for further examination.

Funnel clouds spotted Thursday afternoon

A large thunderstorm that moved through southeastern Manitoba on Thursday afternoon spawned funnel clouds.

Tornado warnings were issued for areas southeast of Winnipeg on Thursday, including Niverville and Steinbach. 

Funnel clouds were spotted Thursday afternoon in the Kleefeld area. So far, there have been no reports of the funnel clouds actually touching down or causing any damage.

Cigarette butt sparks house fire

Everyone in a Winnipeg home is safe after a fire on Wednesday afternoon that firefighters say was started by a cigarette butt.

At 1:34 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a bungalow in the 100 block of Ridley Street.

At the scene, crews saw heavy flames and smoke coming from the house. Firefighters attacked the fire from the outside until it was safe to enter and continue fighting the fire inside the house. Crews declared the fire under control at 2:05 p.m.

Man drowns despite heroic efforts from bystanders

A 33-year-old man is dead after he began to struggle while swimming in a lake on Sunday evening.

The Manitoba RCMP says the South Indian Lake detachment received a report of a possible drowning at South Indian Lake at 7:15 p.m.

According to the RCMP, an adult male had been swimming when he began to struggle and go below the water.

Severe thunderstorms rumble through the area Sunday night - Rainwatchers

It was a noisy Sunday evening for some spots in Southern Manitoba as a line of showers and thunderstorms slid through the region. Police make arrest in skateboard assault

Police have made an arrest after a man who was spending time with his family along the Red River was attacked with a skateboard.

The Winnipeg Police Service says that they were called to the public river dock in the 400 block of Tache Ave. around 10 p.m. on June 29 for a man who had been assaulted. Officers met the man at St. Boniface Hospital where he went to be treated for an upper body injury sustained in the assault.

Police arrest man suspected of hit and run killing one-year-old boy

UPDATE:

Saskatchewan RCMP are reporting that they arrested Mervin Poorman Friday evening at a Cold Lake, Alta. residence.

“Officers would like to thank the public for providing information which assisted with the investigation,” said the release.


The Saskatchewan RCMP say that 33-year-old Mervin Poorman from Kawacatoose First Nation is wanted for a Thursday-evening fatal hit and run.

Police have disclosed that the 5:50 p.m. call to the Punnichy RCMP was for a collision involving a small child on George Gordon First Nation.

Smiles across Rainwatchers faces with some regions seeing first rain in weeks Thursday

You could hear the smiles spreading across faces throughout the Central Plains, Pembina and Red River Valleys Thursday morning as raindrops pattered against windows and roofs. Even though there have been spotty showers and thunderstorms over the past several weeks, large pockets of the region hadn't received measurable precipitation in two to three weeks.
