Hellebuyck sensational, Connor clutch again in Jets victory over Sabres

The Winnipeg Jets are continuing their high-flying ways earning their sixth win in seven games on Thursday night.

The Jets took on the Sabres in Buffalo and bounced back strong after a 7-5 loss in Detroit on Tuesday night. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck had allowed six goals in that match up, but you would have had no idea watching him play just two nights later.

"He was outstanding tonight," coach Rick Bowness said to reporters after the game. "He was the difference maker."

Visiting Thunderbirds prey on Ice in OT

The two top teams in the Canadian Hockey League went beyond 60 minutes Wednesday night at the ICE Cave inside Wayne Fleming Arena to decide their lone regular season matchup.

Nico Myatovic's 15th goal of the season at 3:26 of overtime gave the Seattle Thunderbirds a 4-3 decision over the Winnipeg ICE.

Matthew Savoie scored twice for Winnipeg, his 16th and 17th, while Conor Geekie added his 18th. Savoie's first of the night opened the scoring 2:39 into the game. Geekie's goal with 5:21 remaining in regulation forced overtime.

Thunderbirds swoop into Winnipeg for first time

The Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg will play host to the top two teams in the WHL tonight, with the winner taking the top spot in the league for the time being. Fans will also have a chance to see a Winnipeg Jets prospect in action.

The Winnipeg Ice host the Seattle Thunderbirds in a 7 p.m. face off at the Ice Cave inside Wayne Fleming Arena at the University of Manitoba. Both teams sit atop their conference with 58 points each, although Winnipeg has two games in hand.

Fire closes Arlington Wednesday morning

Crews are mopping up after a fire in the Daniel McIntyre neighbourhood early Wednesday morning.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to a house in the 600 block of Arlington St. just before 3 a.m. for reports of a fire.

Several units responded to the blaze. Few details are known at this time, but as of 4:30 a.m. the fire was under control and crews were cleaning up.

Arlington is currently closed between Sargent Ave. and Wellington Ave. It's not clear how long the closure may last but for the time being, motorists should plan accordingly.

Weyburn man faces three charges including sexual assault, Holy Family School Division responds

A man has been charged with sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, and sexual assault against a female youth, according to the Weyburn Police Service.

The court date is set in Weyburn for February 28th.

This morning, Discover Weyburn spoke with Gwen Keith, Director of Education with the Holy Family School Division, in regards to inappropriate communications alerted to the Weyburn Police Service last week by concerned parents. 

Crown land lease and permit auctions happening online this year

The Manitoba government’s agricultural Crown land lease and permit auctions will be held online this year.


Agriculture Minister Derek Johnson says this approach ensures Manitoba producers have equal opportunity to rent lands that will support their farming operations.
 

A number of agricultural crown land parcels will be available to rent for haying, grazing or cropping. The official listing of agricultural crown lands available for rent can be found online.

Silver Alert issued for missing senior

The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a missing 74-year-old man.

Albert Fleury was last seen in Winnipeg's Heritage Park area on Monday, January 9, 2023, according to a release from the Winnipeg Police Service.

He is described as 5’9” in height, with a thin build, and long white hair.

Fleury was last seen wearing a black puffer jacket, white belt, and shoes with grey shoelaces.

The Winnipeg Police Service activates a silver alert when a vulnerable adult person is reported as missing.

Police alerted by concerned parents about inappropriate communications

Concerned parents in Weyburn alerted Police to inappropriate communications that occurred recently, between one of their children and an unnamed adult over social media. 

According to Police, the adult in question is employed by a local school division.

The Weyburn Police Service conducted an investigation into the matter, and the adult is facing three charges.

They were released with numerous conditions and are set to appear in court at a later date.

Pastor Jack Hayford dead at 88

A well-known pastor, author, and songwriter passed away over the weekend.

Pastor Jack Hayford, The King’s University and Seminary (TKU) founder and chancellor emeritus died on Sunday, January 8, according to a statement from Jack Hayford Ministries.

Hayford died in his home in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California. He was 88 years old. His family said he died peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of the morning, having eaten dinner with his wife, Valarie, and having spoken to one of his grandkids the evening before.

Ice double-up on visiting Winterhawks

17-year-old Zach Benson scored three goals and assisted on one of Matthew Savoie’s two goals in the game as the Winnipeg Ice beat the Portland Winterhawks 6-3 Sunday at the ICE Cave inside Wayne Fleming Arena.

Benson’s second hat trick of the season helped the Ice improve their record to an Eastern Conference-leading 29-5.

Carson Lambos rounded out Winnipeg’s attack, who had a 2-0 lead after the first period and a 5-1 advantage through 40 minutes.

Ryan McCleary, Robbie Fromm-Delorme and Marcus Nguyen replied for Portland (26-6-2-1).
