'Electrical failure' sparks house fire Sunday evening

Everyone is safe after a house fire Sunday in Niakwa Place.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a single-storey home in the 100 block of Fallbrook Bay just before 5 p.m.

The City of Winniepg says in a release that when firefighters arrived they saw flames and smoke coming from the home.

Firefighters were able to enter the home and attacked the fire from inside the structure.

They were able to get the fire under control by 5:20 p.m.

Everyone got out of the building safely and no injuries were reported.

Wind chills of -50 in the north, temperatures will plummet in south throughout day

Much of northern Manitoba remains under an extreme cold warning Monday as arctic air continues to push through the region.

Places like Tadoule Lake have been under an extreme cold warning for a week now. Wind chill values of -45 to -50 are being experienced throughout the regions under the warning.

Winnipeg Ice top Raiders at home

Conor Geekie's second goal of the game with 2:27 remaining in regulation time proved to be the deciding marker Saturday night as the Winnipeg ICE beat the Prince Albert Raiders 6-4.

Matthew Savoie also scored twice while Zach Benson and Ben Zloty rounded out the attack. Benson's goal was the 50th of his WHL career. Ty Nash chipped in with three assists.

The ICE outshot the Raiders 31-25. Goaltender Mason Beaupit earned the victory while Max Hildebrand suffered the loss.

Brayden Dube, Sloan Stanick, Carson Latimer and Ryder Ritchie had the Prince Albert goals.

Semi crash affecting Highway 1 at Deacon's Corner

A semi crash on the Trans-Canada Highway just east of Winnipeg is currently impacting traffic in both directions.

Witnesses say that a semi travelling westbound appeared to lose control and go into the eastbound lanes.

It is currently jackknifed across the eastbound lanes after the Deacon's Corner intersection.

The westbound lanes are also reduced to one lane while emergency crews respond.

Snow and wind have caused some tough driving conditions in some areas.

UPDATE: Suspect in alleged kidnapping of toddler and woman now in police custody

A man at the centre of a provincial manhunt is now in police custody.

Police had been searching for Michale Klimchuk since late Friday afternoon after he allegedly had an encounter with police in the parking lot of a Portage la Prairie hotel, tried to run over officers, drove into oncoming traffic on Highway 1, and kidnapped a 2-year-old girl and 25-year-old woman.

The RCMP sent out a release Sunday morning confirming that the Winnipeg Police Service took Klimchuk into custody earlier Sunday morning. Mounties say that he was taken into custody without incident.

Man shot to death in apartment

Police in Winnipeg are investigating yet another homicide after calls for shots fired in the West End early Saturday.

The Winnipeg Police Service says they received the report around 1:44 a.m. at an apartment block in the 500 block of Furby Street. Callers said they heard shots fired inside the building.

Upon arrival, officers located a severely injured adult male inside a suite and administered emergency medical care.

Zloty had goal, two assists in Winnipeg's 6-3 win over Saskatoon Blades in WHL

The Winnipeg ICE improved their record to 22-2 on the season with a 6-3 victory Friday night over the Saskatoon Blades.

Graham Sward opened the scoring with his first goal as a member of the ICE. Conor Geekie, Ben Zloty, Ty Nash, Owen Pederson and Vladislav Shilo rounded out the offence as Winnipeg had a 1-0 lead after the opening period and a 3-1 advantage through 40 minutes.

Nash's goal extended his goal-scoring streak to five consecutive games while at the other end of the ice goaltender Daniel Hauser made 30 saves improving his personal record to 16-0.

UPDATE: Police arrest murder suspect in death of 16-year-old male

The Saskatchewan RCMP announced late Tuesday afternoon that Edgar Kakakaway Jr. was arrested without incident on Keeseekoose First Nation.

Police did not provide any court information at the time.

Kakakaway Jr. had already been charged with the following offences following the death of a 16-year-old male that occurred early Saturday morning on Keeseekoose First Nation.
