Reed believes town needs to look towards further annexation

A year-end report on development indicates Cochrane is growing faster than anticipated and the idea of preparing to annex additional land was raised by town councillor Alex Reed.

According to a census completed in May, Cochrane grew by 2,082 people, or 5.6 per cent, and development has remained elevated over the last two years compared to the last decade. The census pegged the population at 37,011, and with more homes constructed has grown further.

First RVC candidate submits papers ahead of municipal election

The first nomination is in for Rocky View County's (RVC) next council members.

Beverly Copithorne has officially submitted her papers to run for Division Two Councillor, representing the area south of Cochrane.

In RVC, council members are elected by division, with voters casting ballots in their respective areas. The county consists of seven divisions.

County residents interested in running have until Sept. 22 at noon to submit their nomination papers. 

The municipal election will go ahead on Oct. 20.

Cochrane Water Ninjas continue to rewrite provincial record book

The Cochrane Water Ninjas delivered an exceptional performance at the Max Bell Lifesaving Sport Competition in Lethbridge, Mar. 8 - 9, achieving remarkable personal bests and setting multiple records.

The team, consisting of 51 dedicated swimmers, demonstrated outstanding skill and determination, with athletes surpassing their previous bests by fractions of a second to over 20 seconds.

Adding to their success, the Water Ninjas claimed an impressive nine out of 10 provincial records in the older age group category.

Carney announces plans to boost Canada's military footprint in the Arctic

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday that Ottawa will expand the Canadian Armed Forces’ presence in the Arctic and turn to Australia's over-the-horizon radar tech to monitor threats from adversaries such as China and Russia.

Carney also pledged $253 million in new funding for Indigenous reconciliation initiatives in the North.

They include $94 million to upgrade power plants in Nunavut and $20 million for a hydroelectricity project to help move northerners off diesel.

Carney says U.S. must stop 'disrespectful' comments before comprehensive talks

Prime Minister Mark Carney says United States President Donald Trump will have to stop his "disrespectful" comments about Canada before the two countries can have comprehensive bilateral conversations about trade and security.

"We've called out those comments. They're disrespectful, they're not helpful, and they need to stop," Carney said in response to a question regarding Trump's repeated remarks about Canada becoming the 51st state. 

"They will have to stop before we sit down and have a conversation about our broader partnership with the United States."
