Morden Collegiate Institute adds administration time as two VP positions are filled in Western School Division 

Two familiar faces will step in to a pair of Vice Principal roles in Western School Division (WSD). 

According to a press release, WSD has hired an Interim Vice Principal for Ecole Morden Middle School (EMMS) effective April 3rd and running to the end of this school year.  

Minnewasta Golf and Country Club a stroke closer to the fundraising pin

The Minnewasta Golf and Country Clubhouse project is a bit closer to the pin in fundraising with a cheque presentation on Thursday from Access Credit Union in Morden.

Access Credit Union Managing Partner Candace Collins shared the good news.

"Today, we presented a donation check for the Minnewasta Golf and Country Club for $50,000 to go towards their new building project. Access is wanting to be part of the communities that we're in and we think it's an important project. We're happy to donate and be part of our local community."

Morden's rapid growth and affordable housing shortage topic for discussion at council meeting

An Affordable Housing Strategy was presented by Scatliff + Miller + Murray, a consultant group, to Morden City Council last week. It was the result of an Affordable Housing Grant the city received from the Province in 2022. 

The meeting was well attended by service agencies, non-profit organizations, concerned citizens, and people with a vested interest in finding affordable housing in the community, according to Economic Development Officer Jason Dyck.

He shared how the funds were also used.

Filming wraps up for TV sitcom, Maria and the Mennos in Winkler 

Last day of filming of Maria and the Mennos took place last Friday at the Milt Olfert farm, where cast and crew of the Manitoba-Made TV sitcom has been in production for the last couple of months.

Co-writer of the show, Tina Fehr-Kehler shared what the last days of filming was like, looking back. 

Morden and Miami receive community event grants, one will revive cherished festival from the past

On Thursday the Manitoba Government announced the recipients of the Community Celebrations Program part of the Arts, Culture and Sport in Community Fund established in August 2022, according to a press release from the Manitoba Government on behalf of Manitoba, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Obby Khan.  

The $100,000 funding will be distributed through three programs: large capital projects; small capital projects and special initiatives; and community celebrations, over the next three years.  

Just a few more repairs to be done in the R.M. of Stanley from last Spring's flooding

Last year's spring flood damage in the RM of Stanley has come a long way with a few more areas left to repair. 

Reeve Ike Friesen explains. 

"We have 248 sites that have been repaired. There are 26 sites still remaining to be fixed. Four of those require engineering, and we do expect those to be completed in 2023. So overall, I think we've done really well." 

He continued to explain areas still left to repair and the changes being made as they move forward. 

Manitoba's largest parade will be back this summer at Morden's Corn & Apple Festival

The Morden Corn and Apple Festival is back again this year and longtime Morden resident, Tammy Duncan and her high school friend Tara Ritchie have rolled up their sleeves to step into the leadership as Co-Chairs for the Morden Corn and Apple Festival Parade Committee. 

Duncan announced the great news. 

Morden Chamber of Commerce sets a three year course

Last month, the Morden Chamber Of Commerce Board of Directors took time to develop a strategic plan to guide their steps for the next few years.

Executive Director Clare Agnew explained the process.

"What we looked at first was what we've been doing, and what's working well, and how things have changed for us and the community, the business community for sure, since the pandemic. And moving forward, how that might look a little different? The facilitator helped us review what has worked in the past and then also helped us to focus on moving forward."
