Ste. Anne goalie drafted into Professional Women's Hockey League

A hockey player from Ste. Anne says she is on cloud nine after being drafted into the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL).

Goalie Raygan Kirk was selected by Toronto with the 42nd and final pick in Monday's draft. She says it was a long night in St. Paul, Minnesota, waiting for her name to be called. But then the moment came, which Kirk refers to as a surreal experience and something she will forever remember.  

Investigators perform another extensive search for missing Piney senior

Search and rescue teams combed the woods again last weekend with hopes of finding a missing senior from the Rural Municipality of Piney.

According to RCMP, 70-year-old Jean Backman last made contact with a friend on October 15th. Four days later, Sprague RCMP received a request to check on her wellbeing. Officers attended and searched her property and residence but were unable to locate her. Here we are, eight months later, and Backman is still missing. 

Niverville Mayor offers message to residents following Wednesday's shooting

"This would obviously be a first."

Those were the words of Niverville Mayor Myron Dyck on Wednesday following a deadly shooting overnight.

Police have so far released few details. But what we do know is that an adult male is dead in relation to an officer-involved shooting. It happened sometime before 3 am in front of the Shell gas station and Tim Hortons restaurant. 

Plett nearing the finish line as a Senator

Don Plett of Steinbach has entered his last year as a Senator. 

Plett was appointed to the Senate in 2009. Before that, he was the President of the Conservative Party of Canada for seven years. In Canada, Senators can only serve until the age of 75. Plett will reach that milestone on May 14th of next year. 

"I'm, I guess in my sunset time," says Plett. "I've got a year left until I reach that golden age that I have to look for something else to do."

Local politicians support lobby efforts to pave PR 210

Elected officials are applauding the efforts of a grassroots team pushing for the paving of a 12-kilometre stretch of Provincial Road 210.

Spokesperson Bill Stowe says PR 210 from Woodridge to Highway 12 is in "absolutely horrendous" condition. The majority of this road is gravel and Stowe says the 12-kilometre stretch should only take about eight minutes to drive, but these days can take up to 20 minutes.

Wayne Anderson is Reeve for the Rural Municipality of Piney. He says that road is in bad condition both in spring and any time it rains. 

Rainfall warning remains for most of Southern Manitoba, heavy rain expected Thursday night

There is a rainfall warning in effect for much of southern Manitoba.

Natalie Hasell with Environment Canada says there is a low-pressure system sitting over North Dakota that is going to bring a lot of rain, beginning later in the day on Thursday. 

Hasell says we can expect rain, at times heavy, to begin late Thursday evening. Between 10 and 15 millimetres of rain is anticipated Thursday night. Friday's forecast also calls for rain, at times heavy, with another 10 to 20 millimetres expected. Periods of rain are also expected Friday night.
