Conservative Party of Canada members voting for next Portage-Lisgar candidate

The vote to find the next Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) candidate in Portage-Lisgar begins today and concludes tomorrow. Party members will be casting their ballots for one of four candidates (listed in alphabetical order);

Three people involved in serious crash near Portage

Three people were rushed to hospital following a crash this morning near Portage la Prairie. 

According to police, the single vehicle rollover happened in the eastbound lanes of Highway 1. STARS air ambulance was dispatched to the scene at 9:10 am. 

Police say the crash involved a 35-year-old male driver from La Broquerie and his 20-year-old male passenger from Blumenort. 

Portage fire crews also arrived on scene and stated a third person was taken to Portage District General Hospital.

Local farmer reacts to recent rainfall

One local farmer has reacted to the recent rainfall. Craig Finnie of Finnie and Wishart Farms says the downpour did not have much of an effect on his crops. He explains how it actually helped his field. 

"In some places, maybe a little bit too much, but there's more rain on the north side of Portage, then there was 9 or 10 miles north, but I don't think there's too much the odd place maybe there's a little bit of water laying, but overall I think there was a really good rain, it won't do any harm. It will do a lot of good" 

Manitoba looks at becoming mining destination

As the province looks to grow its economy, Manitoba is looking to potentially enter the mining industry.

The province sent its largest delegation to this week’s Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto. Premier Heather Stefanson says the conference, which runs from June 13-15, will allow them to look at potential investment opportunities regarding the province's mineral resources.

RCMP arrest two following violent encounter

Portage la Prairie RCMP arrested two people after an altercation became violent.

Police say on June 5th, at roughly 1:10 a.m., they received a report of the two men who were both from Portage, having a dispute before turning violent. The police then showed up and were able to arrest both of them.

A 30-year-old man was arrested and faces the charge of Mischief Under $5000, while a 20-year-old man faces charges of Assault with a Weapon.

Both men were released to appear in court at a later date.

RCMP looking for person behind stolen vehicle

Portage la Prairie RCMP are asking for the public's assistance to find whoever stole a vehicle that ended up crashing on Scott Avenue.

Police say on June 3rd, at around 2:15 a.m., they received the call of the vehicle crashing into a guard rail. Just after 3 a.m. that night, they received a call about a vehicle that had been stolen from a business in the 2400 block of Saskatchewan Avenue West. It was determined that they found the stolen vehicle.
