Wakaw Poachers receive fines totalling $16,960
A routine hunter compliance check last fall turned into an investigation for one family that uncovered a pattern of unethical hunting practices and offences spanning 10 years.
The case concluded on July 12 in Wakaw Provincial Court, says the Government of Saskatchewan. Four individuals pleaded guilty to a total of 18 counts of various wildlife infractions. Donna Balone, Miles Balone, Travis Balone and Nicole Forcier received combined fines of $16,960 and hunting suspensions ranging from one to three years.
SLGA stores set to close
The provincial government is getting out of the liquor vending business. So says Premier Scott Moe by way of last Wednesday’s Throne Speech. The remaining 34 operating liquor stores will be phased out in a plan to be determined in the near future. That planning will likely look at labour force transition as remaining workers face layoffs.
RCMP investigation leads to arrests and cocaine seizure in Melfort
An RCMP Prince Albert Crime Reduction Team (CRT) investigation has led to the arrest of three individuals and the seizure of 178 grams of cocaine in the Melfort area.
The investigation started in May 2022. This in-depth investigation continued through the summer and into the fall. CRT officers used specialized advanced tactics, including surveillance and judicially-authorized tracking, to gather evidence.
RCMP reminds motorists to refresh their winter driving chops
This week has been the annual test of every motorist’s “road patience”, especially for those drivers caught in this week’s nasty mess in the province’s south. It’s a clear indication that it’s time for drivers to brush up on winter driving protocols, says Saskatchewan RCMP. The ice and snow may vanish for a bit, but soon enough the next inevitable wintry blast will arrive along with the need to contend with winter road conditions.

Punnichy RCMP deploy taser in arrest
Punnichy RCMP contended with a male resisting arrest during an attempted apprehension on October 22.
Punnichy RCMP investigated a confirmed sighting of an adult male wanted on numerous Criminal Code charges on the George Gordon First Nation. They conducted immediate patrols and located the adult male sitting in a truck parked at a local business. When officers advised he was under arrest, the male locked himself into the truck and made attempts to start the vehicle. Officers gained access to the truck through the window and made multiple attempts to arrest the male.
Wynyard Bears advance in conference playdowns with convincing win

The Wynyard Bears continued their winning ways and will advance to SHSAA Provincial Elite 8 to represent Conference 3 . The Bears defeated the visiting Lanigan Lazers 58 to 16 on George Lamb Field on Saturday October 22. Kick off went at 1 pm.
Bears led 6-0 after one, 28-8 at the half , 42 -16 after 3 and 58 -16 to win Conference 3 birth to Playoffs. Wynyard will now travel to play Conference 4 which is represented by Cupar. Cupar is the only 2A team in Conference 4 so had a bye week.
Broncos split results in weekend games
The Humboldt Broncos split their weekend efforts with a loss on the road and a hard fought victory back home.
The Kindersley Klippers dumped the Broncos 5-3 on Friday night. Alec Saretsky's game-opening goal set up the Broncos with the only scoring of the first period. Kindersley’s Logan Cox tied the score early in the second, but Saretsky potted his second of the night, and the ever-present Jacob Boucher handed the Broncos a 3-1 lead after 2.
One stop shopping at the Muenster Trade Fair
There’s nothing better than shopping locally, and for residents of Muenster, it didn’t get any more local than their own Community Hall on Saturday for the annual fall trade show. The event had been a pre-Covid staple, and Saturday proved the regions appetite for the wonderful home prepared fare and all of the business options.
A first taste of winter for Saskatchewan
A fast tracking low combined with winds from the north gave much of Saskatchewan its first taste of winter on Sunday. In Humboldt and area, the snow started accumulating late Sunday morning and overnight has amassed the predicted 10-15 cm. Along with temperatures hovering near 0 and strong northerly winds driving it, roads are snow covered in many areas with rough ice slowing traffic down. Highway 5 east and west of Humboldt are subject to icing, so motorists are advised to adjust to icy winter driving conditions. Reduce speeds and increase following distances.
