Votes coming in for Saskatchewan's Worst Roads
The votes are being tallied and the race is on for this year’s CAA Worst Roads campaign. Notwithstanding Highway 5 east of Humboldt and the annual breakup of the winter surface during construction, the Humboldt area hasn’t fared too badly when it comes to the top ten poorest driving surfaces. However, not too far away are the vote getters.
Head east down Highway 5 to Buchanan and you’ll see the 7th ranked worst road as it stands today. Marked as “poor road maintenance” on the ballot, the stretch has raised the ire of local drivers.
Humboldt Broncos Club donates to Broncos Memorial Committee
The Humboldt Broncos Jr. A Hockey Club has made a donation of $275,000 to the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Committee to go toward the Broncos Tribute Campaign. The cheque presentation came on April 12.
The money from the Broncos hockey club came from donations that arrived in the wake of the 2018 Broncos tragedy. In a release, the Broncos thanked everyone who made donations of any kind for their generosity and support.
Southey RCMP search for missing individual
A recent sighting of a missing individual has provided police with clues but no whereabouts for a missing individual.
Southey RCMP is seeking the public’s assistance to help locate 35-year-old Joel Campbell of Standing Buffalo First Nation.
Stories in Stone: archaeology and arrowheads
European settlers have been finding arrowheads, shaped projectile fashioned of stone by Indigenous people, since settlers first arrived on the new land. The varying design and craftsmanship has always held fascination as a way of glimpsing the land’s past. Now, the Original Humboldt Committee and the Humboldt Department of Cultural Services join forces to widen that view with some special activities.
Broncos wrap up their season with banquet this Friday
The Humboldt Broncos Award Banquet is coming up this Friday April 14 at 5:30 PM at Jubilee Hall. The Social starts at 5:30 pm with supper and awards to follow.
Ticket prices are $15 ages 12 and up, and $10 for those under 12.
Seating is limited, so call the Broncos ticket office to reserve your spot.
Government of Saskatchewan announces $90,000 grant to research the spread of chronic wasting disease
The Government of Saskatchewan announced a $90,000 grant on April 3 to support research out of the University of Saskatchewan to study the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) and meningeal worm in woodland caribou and other boreal species.
Through the grant, the University of Saskatchewan's Dr. Phil McLoughlin along with his team will study the population dynamics of deer in the southeastern part of the caribou range.
The study will use radio collars and trail cameras, enabling the team to understand animal movements and develop a comprehensive transmission model.
Humboldt/Lanigan RCMP needs help in tracking ATVs
Humboldt/Lanigan RCMP continue to investigate the theft of a pair of ATVs.
In mid January 2023, two ATV’s were stolen from a farm yard near Lanigan. One was a black and orange Polaris 1000 2 seat side by side. The other was a red Suzuki 750 quad.

Ukrainian Easter egg design on display at the Gallery
The timeless art of designing Ukrainian Easter eggs, pysanky, is a remarkable exercise in patience and vision for the artist. Deftly wielding their stylus combinations, artists Elsie Thoms and Elaine Kostuk gave a demonstration of the artwork on Saturday, April 1 at the Humboldt and District Gallery. Patrons gathered around and the duo explained the process as they worked.
RCMP search for male wanted on assault charge
Punnichy RCMP is requesting the assistance of the public in locating 38-year-old Utin Shawn Machiskinic from Kawacatoose First Nation, who is wanted for charges involving assault and assault by choking or strangulation.
Utin Machiskinic is described as a 5’11” male weighing approximately 200 lbs. He has black hair and brown eyes. A photo of him is attached.
If Utin Machiskinic is seen, do not approach, and report sightings of him to police immediately.
Planned power outage for Meacham
SaskPower announces planned outage is scheduled on March from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm affecting customers east and southeast of Meacham. Note: Meacham and all surrounding rurals will experience brief outages at the beginning and end of this timeframe.
