City proclaims "2017-2018 Broncos Day" and "Green Shirt Day"

At the regular Humboldt City Council meeting on Monday, March 27, Mayor Michael Behiel issued two proclamations, one of which was to declare April 6, 2023 as 2017-2018 Humboldt Broncos Day. 

A statement issued by the City of Humboldt notes that, in collaboration with representatives of the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Families, it is preparing a hybrid tribute of videos and on-line content to honor the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos and all those impacted.

Humboldt Broncos goalie suspended after charges for failing to comply with breath screening

Humboldt Broncos goaltender Jared Picklyk has been charged with refusal to comply with a breath screening following an incident in Humboldt early Saturday morning.

 Provincial RCMP report that local RCMP received a call at around 1:25 am Saturday morning. They arrived to find a pickup truck driven by Picklyk had left the roadway and struck a house on 12th Ave. 

The incident occurred following the Broncos win over Nipawin in game five of their playoff round. 

Child pornography charges against Muenster resident

The Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit has charged a Muenster man with possession of child pornography offences. Members of the ICE Unit began an investigation into child pornography in February 2023 and on March 23, 2023, executed a search warrant at a home in Muenster, SK.

As a result of the police investigation, 53-year-old Jason Waldner was charged on March 23, 2023 with:

Two counts of Possession of Child Pornography contrary to 163.1(4) of the Criminal Code.

Broncos seal the deal against Nipawin on home ice

The Humboldt Broncos punched their ticket to the second round following a commanding 6-2 win over the Nipawin Hawks on Friday night. 

The two teams went neck and neck in the opening period with aggressive play.

At 4:07 in the second, captain Ethan Zielke broke the floodgates for the Broncos with assists from Matt Van Blaricom and Tim Kim. Xavier Roy and Daylan Wiegel followed up in the second.

Nipawin tried to get back in it late in the second, but Broncos opened up with another pair off the sticks of Roy and Cage Newans. 

Firearm safety public awareness campagain launches by Saskatchewan Firearms Office

An awareness campaign by the Saskatchewan Firearms Office for firearm storage and use safety has launched on March 20, 2023.  

"The safe use of firearms is the responsibility of every firearms owner in the province. By improving public awareness, we can ensure that all owners use firearms properly and demonstrate safe behaviours for the next generation to follow," said Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Christine Tell. 

SGI’s February report shows drivers just aren't slowing down

As reported by SGI’s Traffic Safety Spotlight, February had many reports of ticketing for drivers going too fast.  

According to SGI, Saskatchewan police wrote 4,251 tickets to drivers for speeding and aggressive driving offences, including: 

  • 3,767 for exceeding the speed limit; 

  • 164 for exceeding it by more than 35 km/h; 

Saskatchewan sees biggest population jump in 108 years

Saskatchewan has seen the biggest population jump in 108 years, says the Government of Saskatchewan. 

“Saskatchewan's population grew by 29,307 to 1,214,618 people in 2022, according to new population estimates released today by Statistics Canada. That's the largest increase in population for Saskatchewan in a single year since 1914,” says the government in a release. 

Premier Scott Moe says with the province’s growing economy, job opportunities and great quality of life are all the reasons for the huge jump in population. 

RCMP seeking help in investigation surrounding school theft

Punnichy RCMP are asking for the public’s help in regard to a theft from a local school. 

In May, 2022, Punnichy RCMP received a report from Punnichy Elementary Community School of a monetary theft that occurred between December, 2021 and March, 2022. As a result of investigation, Punnichy RCMP charged 49-year-old Shelley Dustyhorn from Kawacatoose First Nation with 1 count, theft over $5,000.00.
