Leaders express disappointment with Prime Minister's travel itinerary in Saskatchewan

Not everyone was pleased with the Canadian Prime Minister’s travel itinerary for Monday’s visit to the province.

In a statement on social media, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe expressed disappointment that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not reach out to the Premier’s office about his visit to a rare earth elements processing plant in Saskatoon. 

Raven Speaks, Prairie Structured artists open show

A stunning pair of exhibits opened this week at the Humboldt and District Gallery. Showing in tandem throughout the next few weeks are the exhibits “Raven Speaks” and “Prairie Structured.”

Raven Speaks is a dual effort by painter Rolf Krahn and writer David Macknak. At the opening reception, Krahn talked about his deep and abiding fascination with ravens as intelligent creatures and the focus of attention in many cultures.

It was busy in Lake Lenore over the weekend due to the annual Lake Lenore Fisher Smoker. 

“This event is put on by the Lake Lenore Hall board and the Wildlife club. We’re smoking whitefish that were caught in December at the annual Fishery that happens every year in Lake Lenore,” said Scott Lessmeister, one of the organizers.

Gordie Tentrees and friends wowed the crowd in Watson

Music lovers revelled in the folk, roots, and blues sounds of Gordie Tentrees and his friends on Saturday night at the beautifully restored Watson and District Heritage Museum. The murals, spotlighting images of the developing prairies, were the perfect backdrop for the packed house performance. Bob Hamilton on pedal steel and mandolin and Jaxon Haldane on an arsenal of instruments, including a haunting turn on a bow played handsaw, were a roots music lovers dream.

Humboldt District Hospital Foundation receives funds from SaskTel charity

The Humboldt and District Hospital Foundation was one of the beneficiaries of the SaskTel TelCare donations for 2022. The crown communications company awarded over $193,000 to organizations in communities across the province. 

“SaskTel employees continue to demonstrate their commitment to the communities they serve through the TelCare program,” said Don Morgan, Minister Responsible for SaskTel. “I’d like to thank all SaskTel employees for the work they do every day, and for continuing to support those in need.”

Wakaw RCMP respond to violent assault with a firearm on One Arrow First Nation

Wakaw RCMP were on the scene Thursday following the report of a violent assault involving the use of a firearm on the One Arrow First Nation. The call came in on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at approximately 10:30 pm.

Preliminary investigation by police determined the incident was targeted and the suspect is believed to be an adult male.  

Broncos take 2 of 3 against Flin Flon; prep for the Mustangs this weekend

The Humboldt Broncos took the rubber game of three against the Flin Flon Bombers on Thursday night at the Elgar Petersen Arena. Newly acquired goalie Jared Picklyk acquitted himself well in his first appearance with the Broncos, turning aside 36 of 38 shots in the Broncos 5-2 win.

Humboldt went to work early in the going with Ben Kotylak capitalizing on an assist from Matthew Van Blaricom. Jacob Boucher followed up three minutes later with the help of Daylan Weigel. The Bombers’ Jaeden Mercier narrowed the gap on a power play in the last minute of the first. 

Tires "hoisted" in Humboldt

The Humboldt RCMP have released the details about a call they received on December 17, 2022, between 2:50 am and 3:22 am. 

Two occupants in a white sport utility vehicle stole four tires from a car that was parked on the 300 block of Main Street in the City of Humboldt. 

RCMP says the suspect vehicle was last seen travelling westbound on 4th avenue. 

Cross Country Saskatchewan Cup Race coming to Humboldt

On Sunday, January 15, the Saskatchewan Cup Race will be held in Humboldt on the Dixon trails. 

“Cross Country Saskatchewan hosts a series of sanctioned races throughout the province during the year, and we are on that circuit. This is the third Saskatchewan Cup Race this year in Humboldt,” says Dave Martinuk, now retired president of the Carlton Trail Ski Club, and organizer for the Saskatchewan Cup Race. 

Skiers from across the province will be attending the race, along with some Para Nordic skiers, says Martinuk.
