Full slate of games at Muenster Minor Hockey Day

It's going to be a busy day at the Muenster Arena as Minor Hockey Day takes to the ice. Games get under way at 9:30 am, and continue through all age levels into the evening.

A raffle table and 50/50s are part of the excitement. The concession will be open through the day, thanks to help from the Muenster Elks. 

Here is the rundown for the day to catch the Muenster Flyers teams.

Horizon School Division student enrolment increased for second consecutive year

Enrolment is up at the Horizon School Division according to reports sent to the Ministry of Education this fall. 

In a release, Division reported it has 6,527 students enrolled in Pre Kindergarten to Grade 12 as of Sept. 30, 2022. This includes 140 home-school students and two distance education students not otherwise enrolled in a Horizon school.

REACT Waste Management holiday schedule

REACT Waste Management has made some changes to its pickup schedule for the holidays. 

The REACT office, the Leroy Landfill and all waste and recycling services will be closed on Monday, December 26; Tuesday, December 27; and Monday, January 2. 

All transfer stations and the Hoodoo Landfill will be closed on Saturday, December 24; Monday, December 26; and Monday January 2.

RCMP search for suspects in Archerwill break in

Greenwater RCMP are tracking four suspects in a break and enter at the Archerwill gas station. RCMP received the call in the early morning of December 9. The four were treavelling in four-door  Ford F-150. which  been located on Kinistin Saulteaux Nation. Police investigation determined four individuals stole a large quantity of alcohol and food. The suspects are still at large.

Suspect 1 wore a black hooded jacket, black pants and black boots.

Suspect 2 wore a grey hooded sweater, black pants and white shoes.

Power outages on Thurday for Watrous and Lake Lenore rural

SaskPower has a pair of planned power outages on the books that could affect customers in the area. 
The first is set for 10:00 am to 1:00 pm tomorrow, Thursday December 15th, affecting customers in Watrous in the 100-400 block of 7th Ave west (even numbers only) and the same blocks of 8th avenue (odd numbered addresses).

The second is slated from 1:30 to 2:30 pm, also December 15, affecting customers northeast, east, and south east of Lake Lenore.

Teachers' Federation concerned about new province distance learning enterprise

Following the axiom “everything old is new again,” the Government of Saskatachewan announced the establishment of a treasury board crown corporation to oversee centralized online education. Decades ago, the Ministry of Education decommissioned the provincial correspondence school, leaving divisions like Horizon and Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, which serve Humboldt and area,  to evolve their own distance learning programs.

Mosaic dials back production at Colonsay mine

Citing lower than expected product demands, Mosaic announced that it is temporarily halting production at its Colonsay potash facility.

"Our decision to temporarily curtail Colonsay reflects near-term dynamics and not long-term agricultural market fundamentals. Crop prices remain strong and continue to support healthy grower economics," said President and CEO Joc O'Rourke. "After a year of reduced applications, we believe farmers are incentivized to maximize yields, which should drive significant recovery in fertilizer demand in 2023."

More local exporters and instituions set to benefit with Saskatchewan trade mission to Vietnam

Stories like Watson’s Organic Spices and Herbs are a testament to how trade missions have become an integral part of Saskatchewan’s ag and resource marketing strategy. The company boasts Vietnam as one of its key overseas export destinations. 

Following a reported 50 percent increase in exports from Saskatchewan to Vietnam, according to a government release, Saskatchewan’s Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison is heading to Vietnam to foster additional trade and economic partnerships on behalf of the province.  

Rosthern fire claims one life, displaces ten families

A fire that went through an apartment building in Rosthern on Thursday morning has claimed one life. 

The call came into the Rosthern RCMP and Fire Department at approximately 9 am. 

Responders from Rosthern, Wakaw and Hague arrived to find the building engulfed in flames. RCMP set up a safety perimeter and issued a notification to avoid the area. 

Ten families were impacted by the fire. All but the lone victim got out safely. Some were treated for smoke inhalation.
