Central Alberta is expected to see its first taste of winter today with snow expected for much of the region.

Danielle Desjardins is a Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

"It looks like quite a snowy day over Southern Alberta, especially as you get closer to the Foothills," she said. "That's due to a low-pressure system that's tracking across the Prairies today and in to tomorrow. We can see anywhere from light flurries to actually up to 25 cm in higher terrain in the Foothills region. For the Red Deer/Lacombe area it looks you guys are going to escape the bulk of the snowfall accumulating. It really just looks like flurries for today and ending near midnight tonight."

Desjardins says Red Deer is only expecting about one centimetre today with temperatures hovering around freezing.

She notes the low-pressure system will bring with it a lot of cold air. The overnight low for Lacombe is around minus 10, the coldest so far this fall.

Temperatures are expected to warm up as the week progresses.

"The snow should melt even in the next day or two following this event," commented Desjardins. "It looks like the temperatures rebound into the single digits and even reaching the teens by the weekend. We aren't expecting that snow to stick around with those warmer temperatures for the rest of the week."

She reminds motorists to use caution on the roads today as the commute could be slick with snow accumulation. Click here for current road conditions.
