Chinook's Edge students can now enroll in a new dual credit course. Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) is offering kinesiology to dual-credit students for the first time.

"Chinook’s Edge has 12 students enrolled, along with other students from two other K-12 school divisions. The Kinesiology course is offered mostly online and in asynchronous classes, supported by staff at the school level," stated Chinook's Edge.

Along with a Medical Terminology course offered by the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, RDP offers three courses centred on preparing students for professions in the health sciences, including kinesiology.

"Health Sciences is one pathway Chinook’s Edge is working on developing further, as well as pathways like skilled trades, hair stylist, technology, aviation, business/finance, and agriculture."

Students were allowed to explore the College's high-performance lab by attending a kinesiology session in person last week. Rob Weddell, the instructor, was demonstrating fitness evaluations to the students.

“I took the course because I want to do physio or kinesiology after I finish high school,” says Victoria Hiebert, a Grade 11 student attending Didsbury High School.

The course covers topics such as stress management techniques, fundamental nutrition principles, the effects of physical activity on health, ideas and strategies related to changing unhealthy behaviours, and factors that affect personal health.

“We are happy to expand dual credit programming available to students,” says Brianne Fletcher, Career Coordinator, Chinook’s Edge School Division. "“We know these experiences are meaningful for students; they help students explore career options, they help students connect academic success in their schooling to the futures they desire, and they build confidence in students that they can be successful in the post-secondary environment."

Students who finish the course get credits that can be applied to both their post-secondary studies and high school diplomas. Shortly before Christmas break, the semester comes to an end. In the second semester, it will be available once more.

The division has a total of 12 schools in neighbouring communities, including Olds, Mountain View County, Didsbury, Crossfield and Carstairs.
