Saskatchewan NDP candidate Brenda Edel is making a push down the stretch of the provincial election to challenge Saskatchewan Party MLA Jim Reiter in Rosetown-Delisle.
This is Edel's second attempt to unseat Reiter, who has been an MLA since 2007.
Reiter won the 2020 election against Edel with 77.7% of the vote.
"I felt the province and people of Rosetown-Delisle deserve better than they're receiving," Edel said. "I hear messages on the doorstep people that are struggling being able to afford to pay bills, healthcare, affordability and crime."
Edel believes she would be a more responsive representative in the riding.
"(Reiter) been in the government for 17 years," she said. "I hear on the doorstep that people are frustrated that calls are not answered when they have problems they'd like to discuss, and I hear people who are concerned their needs are not being met. I would be a candidate that is prepared to hear people's calls, answer them, listen, and try to ensure that the needs of our people are met. It's important for a government to be accessible and willing to talk to the people."
Edel claimed healthcare and education in Saskatchewan rank at the bottom of Canadian provinces and to be improved.
"We need to ensure that our professional people are supported," she said. "Make sure that everyone is at the table to make decisions and not just at the top."
Edel is President and one of the founding members of Barrier Free Saskatchewan.
"I'm someone with lived experience who has been pushed aside and told I don't have the tenacity to do things," "I've brought forward constitutional amendments for people with disabilities, I've pushed for the acceptable Saskatchewan act, and I'm not someone is going to take no for an answer. I'm willing to work for the people and do everything I can so that our people are all treated fairly."
The race in Rosetown-Delisle also includes Sean Muirhead of the Saskatchewan Green Party.
Early voting continues through Saturday, while Monday is officially election day in Saskatchewan.
