A mature drivers refresher course is coming to Estevan to help give older drivers reminders of the rules of the road.
Put on by the Saskatchewan Safety Council, the free event will be held on November 6 at the Estevan Senior Centre from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Community Relations Coordinator Amanda Wood says the 6-hour course is just for teaching and doesn't affect people's licenses.
"There are no exams, there's nothing that affects your license at all. It's just a refresher on driving, so we cover a lot of topics that involve normal driving situations such as intersections, following distance, and maintaining an open gate around your vehicle."
"We'll cover environmental driving hazards such as skids, head-on collisions, hydroplaning, how to protect yourself while you're driving, and then we'll go over a review of safety devices like seatbelts and airbags and we'll cover medication awareness, vision and effective use of your eyes. So as we age, our driving is affected. So we just talk about how to be confident drivers and use best practices when driving on Saskatchewan roads."
Despite the programs being aimed at those 55 and over, there are no age limits for the program with Wood saying anyone can join.
"The program is actually available for anybody who would like to attend, the material in the program is best for individuals who've been driving for at least a few decades and who would like to get a refresher on some things that they might not have heard of since they were probably 16 years old."
Anyone looking to be a part of the course can register at sasksafety.org or call the council's toll-free line at 1-855-280-7115.
