With moisture falling onto frozen ground here in the southeast, the RCMP are looking to make sure people are driving safely for the conditions.
They warn that road conditions and visibility may be reduced over the day, increasing the risk of being on the road.
Before heading out on the road, they encourage drivers to take a look at the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline. If that site forecasts poor weather or road conditions on the path to your destination, the Saskatchewan RCMP advises people to delay their travel.
If absolutely necessary, travellers should stay on roads that have recently received road maintenance. Information on those conditions and what roads have been worked on is also available on the highway hotline.
RCMP also offered the following safety tips for winter driving:
- Scrape all the ice off your windows before driving.
- Remove all snow from your vehicle, including from your headlights, taillights and roof.
- Slow down on slippery or snowy roads.
- Be gentle and smooth when you accelerate, brake or steer.
- Be cautious when using cruise control on icy or snowy roads.
- Make preparations by stocking your vehicle with extra warm clothes, candles, matches, non-perishable snacks, a snow shovel, traction mats, booster cables, and a tow rope or chain.
- If you become stranded on the highway, do not leave your vehicle and turn it on periodically to warm up, but try to conserve fuel. Clear out any snow or ice near your tailpipe to avoid carbon monoxide buildup.
