If anyone ever tells you that your vote doesn't count, point them to the municipal election in Tompkins.

Ethan Wickstrom won the race for mayor by just six votes over Tom Secord.

"I was hoping that I would get elected," Wickstrom said. "But it really came down to our community and what they felt we needed, right?

"I've been sitting on council for the last three years and I felt like I wasn't done trying to better our community."

His focus to start with is on the basics the community needs.

"Focuses would be definitely on our infrastructure and keeping it running," Wickstrom said. "Other priorities would be just keeping our community viable and vibrant.

Wickstrom, a 34-year-old who works for a local RM, noted with housing prices the way they are he could see growth for their community.

"I would love to see growth," he said. "Whether it be retirees moving into town to relax and enjoy their retirement, or young families coming in to keep our schools going and just bring more people."

Wickstrom replaces the outgoing Mayor Ken Best.

He will be joined on council by Tyler Mackay, Patty Sloan, Terry Churchill and Linda Dodds.

"I feel like through this election we ended up with a great council," Wickstrom said. "That I think we should all be able to work very well together and do our best to better our community."

Wickstrom is from Alberta originally but said he has always considered Tompkins his home.
