The southeast has a bit more left to go for the extreme cold hitting the area, but the end is starting to come into sight.
For over a week, an extreme cold warning has been placed on much of the prairies with arctic air flowing into the area.
There's a bit more cold to get through before we get to relatively warmer temperatures, says Environment Canada Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins.
"Extreme cold conditions are going to continue. You might get a little bit of a reprieve where it's not quite the -40 criteria during the daytime, but definitely overnight and then later on in the weekend through early next week, it's looking to stick around till midweek next week."
With over a week of extreme cold and even more to go, Desjardins says that the length of this warning has been unusual.
"It's definitely on the longer and not unprecedented. I don't have stats specifically for Estevan, but I have pulled a few stats here where we've had at least -30 for a stretch of 19 days in the past, but that doesn't mean that this one is not a long one."
"There are other periods of time where you know we've had, 8-9 stretch days in the past. This one may go on, not necessarily -30, but off and on the extreme cold last thing for about 10 days. So that's definitely one of the longer stretches and by far the longest stretch this season."
It's not just the cold that's hitting the southeast as Desjardins says we'll deal with a bit of windy flurries coming in overnight.
"It's not looking substantial. There's a little bit of a system tracking across the United States, so some of that snow is going to get into extreme southern Saskatchewan. The Cypress Hills look like they might get about 5 centimetres. That snow may get into the southeast, maybe a centimeter or two, but right now, it looks like Estevan is right on the edge. So just a chance of flurries right now."
While the cold is very likely to break by mid-next week Desjardins says how it leaves is still up in the air.
It does look like it's becoming pretty consistent within the models that this cold is going to break next week. It might be delayed by a day or so, but looks like around Wednesday, or Thursday, we're going to get back up into the minus teens, even you know, approaching single digits by the end of the week. So that's good news for people who don't like the cold. It's been quite a long one, but it's locked. We're pretty confident that this is going to happen."
Even with the warmer air in sight for the southeast Desjardins reminds people to stay wary of the colder weather we're going to feel over the weekend.
