The Estevan Curling Club has finished operations for their 2024-25 season, with a few events to wrap down the year. That was finalised on March 25th, when the ice was removed with just a few cleanups left.
President Pauline Ziehl-Grimsrud says that the year was great for seeing some new people come and play curling.
"We're pleased to say that our membership was up this year, and we had a real increase in our participation in our youth programming. So that was always great to see. We had a lot of functions this year of either through the club or through the school system or rentals that focused on youth, so we're really pleased with that this season."
Some of the highlights for Ziehl-Grimsrud included events with Curlsask, including U18 teams from across the province.
That was held along with some local events, with the president thanking the local high school teams for all of their efforts.
"We have a lot of talented kids, and I really tip my hat to the youth, our ECS teams. A couple of years ago, we were down to just a couple of curlers, and this year we put four teams out on the ice. So really, congratulations to the high school and the job they've done bringing out more kids.
Those kids saw some success over the year, with some competitive finishes at a number of events.
Ziehl-Grimsrud says that at home, ice conditions were just about perfect for all the events they held, with some great turnouts for those.
Now they're preparing for what will be a big event during the next season, as the U18 men's and Women's championships will be held in December.
"Certainly having this event in December has certainly gotten us thinking a little bit differently on how we're going to do installation and when we'll begin that and and also we will be doing mid-December floods, which is not typical for us."
Ziehl-Grimsrud says planning is currently ongoing for that event, with her hoping to see plenty of signups for next year.
