The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings are in a must-win situation now as they’ve dropped Game 4 of the Canterra Seeds Cup Finals against the Melfort Mustangs 5-1. The Melfort Mustangs go up 3-1 in the best-of-seven series and look to clinch their second straight SJHL championship on home ice Sunday night. Casey O’Brien, assistant coach for the Red Wings, comments on the loss.
“You know why it was a closer game than the final result. Obviously, a couple of empty netters when we tried to, you know, tie it up or close the gap there but unfortunately, we couldn't find that second goal. The marbles are down right now, and we got their backs against the wall here. There are some positives but at the same time we got to find a way to get a little more offense going forward here on Sunday.”
The Mustangs would open the scoring off a shot from Nolan Roberts that bounced off the boards and in behind Red Wing goaltender Angelo Zol at 5:07 in the first period. The Red Wings would respond as Max Chakrabarti scored his 4th of the playoffs at 16:29 assisted by Drew Molde and Luke Dekay to tie it 1-1 after the first period.
In the second, the Mustangs would retake their one goal lead with a deflection from Zac Somers finding the back of the net assisted by Nicholas Andrusiak and Ty Thorton at 9:34 to make it 2-1 after two periods.
The Mustangs would continue scoring in the third, as Ty Thornton capitalized on the five-minute major penalty against Red Wing forward Ethan Dekay, assisted by Zac Somers and Reilley Kotai at 10:43. They would then add two unassisted empty netters with Zayden Sadlemyer at 18:33 and Danton Cox at 19:53 for a final score of 5-1.
The Red Wings will look to keep their season alive on Sunday night as they head north to Melfort to take on the Mustangs in Game 5 of the SJHL finals at the Northern Lights Palace with the puck drop at 7:30 P.M.
