Heavy rains in recent days have soaked the region, and Moose Mountain Provincial Park is feeling the effects.

“It's not ideal weather for camping,” said Ainsley Sauter, park manager at Moose Mountain. “It's really cold and very, very wet around here.”

Some campsites have taken on water, but crews are actively working to pump it out and assess any needed repairs.

“We're just trying to move the water away,” Sauter said. “Once this stops, we’ll reassess some of the water and maybe bring in some more gravel in some spots. For the most part it's just little maintenance here and there like that.”

While there is no specific threshold of rain that automatically triggers cancellations, Sauter said staff are doing what they can to keep the sites usable.

The weather seems to have deterred many campers from heading out for the long weekend, with the park sitting at about 30 per cent projected occupancy.

“I think the weather must have scared most people away,” Sauter said. “May long is generally very weather dependent. Sometimes we’re quite busy if the weather’s nice. Sometimes we just see more walk-ins if the weather becomes a little nicer than forecasted.”

Park programming has officially kicked off for the season. Discovery packs and recreation packs are available starting this weekend and continuing through the summer.

Two major events are also scheduled for the months ahead. The annual Cannington Fair Day will take place on Sunday, Aug. 3, and the park will host its Cabin Fever Art Festival on Saturday, Aug. 23.

“Our staff has been really working hard to get everything ready for this season,” Sauter said.
