The bright lights, the meticulously maintained grassy green field with perfect white marking lines, the crack of pads and the cheer from fans; it’s hard not to enjoy football. With the excitement of the CFL regular season almost underway, children might look up to these players and feel inspired to join the sport themselves. Well thankfully, Weyburn Minor Football have opened registration for the 2025 season. Tiarra Schneider, program administrator with Weyburn Minor Football, says the excitement for the upcoming season is growing.

“Yeah, we're super excited for another season with Weyburn minor football. It's shaping up to be a great season. We have all three divisions open for registration currently starting with our U10’s all the way up to U14. Our U10 division starts out with our youngest footballers. These are for eight- and nine-year-olds. This is 6-man tackle football. We kind of run it in a Jamboree style where the field is split into 4 sections and it's just kind of mini games of football led by coaches right on the field. Then rolling into U-12, that's for ten- and eleven-year-olds. That's our 9-man tackle football and then finally, it wraps up the U14 with the more traditional 12 man going on.”

With three different age divisions for kids to take part in, they can either learn the ropes early or jump into more competitive football before possibly playing JV at the Weyburn Comprehensive School for the Eagles. Schneider also states that you won’t have to worry about buying all brand-new equipment.

“All (of our) equipment is provided by Weyburn Minor Football aside from your girdle and your socks and your cleats, but girdles and socks can be purchased right at the football shack during equipment pickup day and cleats; I'm actually going to post some used cleats for sale. We have used cleats at the shack. There’s lots of Facebook groups for equipment. You don't need a whole lot to get started, and it's a whole lot of fun.”

The season will begin in mid-August and funding is available for those interested through KidSport Weyburn. If interested in registering for Weyburn Minor Football, visit their website at www.weyburnminorfootball.org and check out their Facebook page for more information.
