The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings started the preparations for the future on Tuesday as they took part in the 2025 SJHL Draft. The team would have five selections – two in the 2010-born draft, and three in the 2009-born draft, including two local players.

In the 2010-born draft, the Red Wings selected Sedley’s Kobe Deck with the 10th overall pick. The defenseman spent the past two seasons with the U15 AA Weyburn Wings, where he put up 34 points in 50 games and added on 69 penalty minutes. Deck is signed to play with the U18 AAA Estevan Bears in the upcoming season.

The second pick of the draft was 13th overall, in the second round. The Red Wings selected Weston Kostiuk. Hailing from Martensville, the 14-year-old forward played with the U15 AA Martensville Marauders last season, where he scored 40 goals and added 21 assists. He will be playing with the U18 AAA Warman Wildcats this season.

In the 2009-born draft, the 3rd overall pick was used by Weyburn to select local product Van Huebner. The 6’3” blueliner played with the Prairie Hockey Academy U17 Prep team last season, where he skated in 36 games, racking up 16 points. He will be skating with the U18 AAA Estevan Bears this coming season.

Huebner’s teammate from Prairie Hockey Academy, Karter Hilbig, was the lone goaltender selected by the Red Wings in the draft. Selected in the 5th round with the 58th overall pick, Hilbig played in 17 games with PHA’s U17 Prep team and was called up for one game with the U18 Prep squad. Huebner finished the season with a 13-4 record with the U17 team, with one shutout while posting a 3.01 GAA and .886 save percentage. His one game with the U18 team was a shutout, as he made 19 saves to record the win.

The final selection of the draft was Connor Howe, taken 70th overall in the 6th round. Howe would put up some impressive numbers in his first year of U18 AAA with the Prince Albert Mintos, scoring 20 goals and chipping in 15 assists. Before joining the U18 AAA, he played two seasons with the Prince Albert Pirates, where he recorded 73 points in 45 games.
