A traffic stop on Highway 2 has led to the seizure of approximately $60,000 in illegal cigarettes and charges against a 37-year-old man from Spruce Grove.
On the morning of June 8, Olds RCMP responded to reports of an erratic driver heading southbound on Highway 2. Witnesses reported the vehicle was speeding at over 150 km/h, nearly sideswiping another driver, and weaving dangerously between lanes.
RCMP were able to locate the suspect vehicle and conduct a traffic stop. During the stop, officers spotted illegal cigarettes in plain view, leading to the arrest of the driver. He has been charged with frauds upon government and possession of untaxed tobacco.
The accused, whose name has not been released as the charges have not yet been sworn before the courts, was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in Didsbury court on August 25.
