An annual initiative to help gather vital data by snapping photos of any insects, wildlife, or plant species begins this week.

Nature lovers and families can take part in the Nature Conservancy of Canada's fifth Big Backyard BioBlitz, which kicks off today and runs until August 4.

Kayla Burak, engagement manager with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, shared that the BioBlitz usually takes place over the August long weekend, but has been extended this year to allow for even more submissions.

"Anyone can participate, any age and no matter where you live," she said. "Even if you live in an apartment, you can take part by looking for bird species on your balcony or whatever you can see in your local park."

Last year, more than 1,830 photos were submitted by Saskatchewan residents for the Big Backyard BioBlitz.

The data from the images is used by municipalities, scientists, conservation biologists, and more to understand species migration, invasive species, and areas that need further conservation.

"When you sign up, you'll get emailed all the information you need," said Burak. "You'll download the iNaturalist app on your phone, or you can submit your observations online at inaturalist.ca as well.

"You'll get added to the big project at iNaturalist, and it's easy, you just take pictures of anything you see."

Anyone looking for more information about the organization and its mission can head to the Nature Conservancy of Canada's website or visit backyardbioblitz.ca to register for the event.
