Smoke from wildfires is causing very poor air quality and reduced visibility for Rocky View County near Airdrie and Crossfield, prompting health officials to issue a warning.

Environment and health agencies say conditions can change quickly, with air quality fluctuating over short distances and varying from hour to hour.

Older adults, pregnant people, infants and young children, as well as those with chronic illnesses or who work outdoors, are being advised to avoid strenuous activities outside. Officials warn that during periods of heavy smoke; everyone’s health may be at risk.

Common symptoms linked to smoke exposure include eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious symptoms such as wheezing, chest pain or a severe cough are possible, and anyone experiencing them is urged to seek medical attention immediately.

Residents are advised to limit time outdoors, reschedule or cancel outdoor sports and events, and check in on neighbours and vulnerable people nearby. 

Indoors, people are urged to keep windows and doors closed, use clean air filters, or run a certified portable air cleaner. Officials note that during heat events, keeping cool should be a priority while also reducing smoke exposure.
