The Outlook RCMP is pleading for public safety around Lake Diefenbaker and the South Saskatchewan River following two waterway incidents earlier this summer.

According to a release from the Saskatchewan RCMP issued on Saturday, the first incident late last month involved two youth fishing, who ended up being stranded on a sandbar.

"Unfamiliar with the South Saskatchewan River, rising water levels and decreasing daylight left them unable to return to shore," says the Saskatchewan RCMP.

Officers from the RCMP, alongside a conservation officer with the Provincial Protective Services (PPS) Branch, rescued the two individuals shortly after midnight on July 27.

“Learn local water areas and watch the weather," says Cst. Jesse Kimball from the Outlook RCMP. "Storms can sneak up and quickly lead to an emergency. If the weather is chancy, we want everyone to stay on the beach.”

The second incident, on August 21, involved a personal watercraft towing a tube that became waterlogged from waves and intense wind on Lake Diefenbaker. RCMP say two adults and three children, all wearing life jackets, were helped by the public, a conservation officer, and Outlook RCMP.

"Thankfully, no injuries were reported to police in either incident," says the Saskatchewan RCMP.

“Recent incidents are a strong reminder of how quickly a fun day on the lake can take a turn,” says conservation officer Inspector Chris Maier of PPS. “Weather can change in minutes, and it only takes a moment for someone to be in serious danger. While we are always ready to help, a few simple steps can prevent emergencies and keep people safe.”

RCMP are recommending that anyone planning to be on the water avoid use if the waves are high, know the lake or river before use, share timelines and area you plan on traversing with someone else not a part of your excursion, follow safe boating guidelines and speed limits, and always wear a life jacket
