A man has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for sexually assaulting a minor and possessing a prohibited weapon.

Jarrett Pearce, who was 21 at the time of the offences, pleaded guilty in Rosetown provincial court to one count of sexual assault and one count of unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon. A publication ban is in place to protect the identity of the victim, who was 15 years old when the offences occurred.

Court heard the assault happened after Pearce and the victim consumed alcohol and cannabis at a party. The victim became intoxicated and vomited outside, where Pearce forced himself on her despite her saying she was too impaired. He stopped briefly, but later followed her and sexually assaulted her a second time while she was still vomiting.

The Crown and defence presented a joint submission, which the judge accepted, noting it was on the lower end of sentencing ranges for such crimes.

Along with his jail term, Pearce will serve 18 months of probation with conditions, including no contact with the victim, mandatory counselling, and a requirement to keep the peace. He is also subject to a 10-year firearm ban and must register as a sex offender for 20 years.

In an unrelated case heard the same day, a man was fined $520 after pleading guilty to failing to complete assigned community service hours.

The court also dealt with several ticket matters, resulting in fines for some individuals while other cases were adjourned. Additional cases were set over to Sept. 25.
