Southeast College announced Wednesday they were introducing two new programs for the 2024-25 academic year, and were bringing one back. The move comes after looking at what could be needed in the communities the college serves.
“This year, we were lucky enough to come up with the opportunity to be able to deliver the Mental Health and Addictions diploma program,” said Sheena Onrait of one of the programs offered. She is the Executive Director of Communications and Strategic Enrollment at the college. “That course is going to be a two-year program and that’s going to be located within our Estevan Campus.”
The other new program being offered by Southeast College is Agribusiness – Production Stream, which is also a two-year diploma program. It will be offered at the Weyburn campus of the college.
The program that will be returning for the 2024-25 academic year is the business diploma in management. The two-year program will be offered at the Weyburn campus.
The application window for new and returning programs, as well as a number of other programs for the 2024-25 school year, is now open. While it may nearly a full year out from the start of classes, Onrait explained the sooner a student can apply for a seat in a program and register, the better, particularly in one course.
“I would say the only program that we do have a solid deadline on is our practical nursing program, and that is because that’s a high-demand program,” Onrait elaborated. “So what that means is that we have more distinct criteria for accepting those students, so we have an application deadline for that program, and that can be found on our website.”
As for the other programs, while the college can accept registrations right up until the week before a class starts, if there are seats available, the sooner the better.
“We would encourage students to apply sooner than later, especially if they want to apply for any type of student loans, or if they need to find any housing or any other funding opportunities, so that gives our staff a little more lead time to be able to work with individual students and be able to come up with a learning plan that meets their needs,” she added.
While the applications for the coming academic year are now being accepted, there are some seats still available in some of the programs that will be starting up in the winter.
“We’ve got continuing care assistant in Weyburn, starting the beginning of January, and we’re still looking for students for that program, and that is a wonderful program that is about eight months in length,” Onrait said.
There are also seats for the program available at the Assiniboia campus.
Other programs Onrait said had seats available in the winter included the electrician program in Moosomin, the welding program in Estevan and the plumbing and pipefitting program in Estevan.
