Dr. Hinshaw says getting vaccinated is more important than ever

Dr. Deena Hinshaw took to the podium for the first time in a month to provide a COVID-19 update today (Wednesday, July 28).

In the past 24 hours, there were 194 new cases with a positivity rate of 2.9 per cent. 

There are 84 people in the hospital and 18 in ICU.

Dr. Hinshaw says the rise in COVID cases is not a surprise.

It was anticipated that with the lifting of restrictions the province would see an increase in COVID-19 cases, especially in unvaccinated people. 

Calgary Stampede not a 'super-spreader' event says Alberta Health

Alberta Health officials say the Calgary Stampede has not become a "super-spreader" event for COVID-19.

Nearly 529,000 people attended the Stampede from July 8-18 and while some positive cases were found early on, it doesn't appear to be a significant driver of rising COVID-19 cases in the province.

Tom McMillan with Alberta Health said so far, only 71 positive cases have been attributed to the Stampede.

July 28: NWHU confirms zero new COVID-19 cases

For the sixth day in a row, the Northwestern Health Unit has reported zero new COVID-19 test results in the region.

Currently, there is one active case connected to the NWHU catchment area. The one active case is in the Rainy River Health Region. The NWHU confirmed that the active case has an address in the jurisdiction but is isolating outside of the area.

Many immigrants unable to get Manitoba COVID-19 vaccine card

If you were not born in Canada and want your Manitoba COVID-19 vaccine card, you may be finding yourself out of luck.

For close to two months, Manitoba has opened its system showing proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with a digital QR code or the physical card. The system the province created does not include foreign nationals, people who are not Manitoban citizens, leaving thousands of people without the ability to show official proof of vaccination.

WSO, William Prince, others joining Manitoba 150 for in-person shows

An organization celebrating Manitoba's 150th anniversary may have had to wait an extra year, but they are putting on twice the show. 

The province is putting on a show, two to be exact, on August 28.

Manitoba 150, an organization put together to celebrate Manitoba's 150 years of being in Canada's confederation, says they are hosting two shows at the end of August called Unite 150.

NWHU encourages kids 12-17 to get vaccinated

As the start of school is just over a month away the Northwestern Health Unit is encouraging students ages 12 to 17 to get vaccinated.

The Medical Officer of Health for the NWHU Dr. Kit Young Hoon wants to remind kids that is the last week for kids to receive their first dose and therefore be able to fit in their second dose and be fully vaccinated for when school starts.

Young Hoon did provide data on vaccine rates of those between the ages of 12 to 17

Recognize something in the new Ghostbusters trailer?

There's something strange coming to the neighbourhood this November and it has a local connection.

A new trailer for the film "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" was released Tuesday morning featuring some familiar backdrops.

The movie used several locations in Alberta for filming back in 2019. That included Calgary, Fort Macleod, Crossfield, Beiseker and Drumheller.

One of the shots in the trailer appears to show the old grain elevator in the tiny hamlet of Dorothy.

Another triple digit day of new COVID-19 cases

Alberta has reported another 134 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours. The positivity rate for the past 24 hours remains below one per cent.

The total active cases in the province have now risen to 1,173.

Hospitalizations dropped by one to 82 and ICU admission remains at 21.

Sadly, another 3 deaths have been reported bringing the total in the province to 2,325.

Vaccinations appear to be leveling off with 75.5 per cent of Albertans having received one shot of vaccine and 63.9 per cent of the provincial population now fully immunized.

Winnipeg police chief sees crime statistic changes during pandemic

Winnipeg police saw some standout changes in their 2020 service calls.

In their latest report, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) is sharing an overview of Winnipeg's 2020 crime rates.

"The Winnipeg Police Service 2020 Statistical Report reflects the crime that was reported in Winnipeg, but it only tells part of the story in what was a remarkable year that saw the city deal with the effects of the COVID-19 virus," Chief Danny Smyth says in a release.
