In Kenora baseball action, the CarStar Rockies took out the Legends 26 to 6.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are on the board in the Stanley Cup final. Steven Stamkos, Pat Maroon and Ondrej Palat each had a goal and an assist in a 6-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche last night.

The two-time defending champion Lightning needed the win after dropping the first two games of the series in Denver. Game four goes tomorrow night in Florida at 7 p.m.

14th "Maybe Annual" Coney Island Music Festival

The 14th "Maybe Annual" Coney Island Music Festival features an afternoon of free live music on Lake of the Woods. The festival lands on the last Sunday of July each year and co-founder Ferg Devins is excited for this year's line-up.

"Karen Barg, assembling a tribute to Debbie Wallace, Brandi Vezina, Winnipeg singer/songwriter Scott Nolan, The 22z from Kenora, and The Honest Heart Collective from Thunder Bay," said Devins.

‘No additional actions can be taken to limit lake level rise’ says LWCB

Lake of the Woods is only 0.23 m away from breaking the record level set in 1950, the LWCB says “no additional actions can be taken to limit lake level rise.” 

The Lake of the Woods Control Board (LWCB) shared on June 20, 2022, that the current level of Lake of the Woods is 324.08 m (1063.2 ft), over the 95th percentile level for this time of the year.  

The average lake level rose by 5.5 cm (2 in) over the past week. 

Students, businesses honour Indigenous culture in Kenora

Kenora residents can enjoy our community’s downtown core and the artwork of local students to honour National Indigenous Peoples Day this week.

In a joint initiative between the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board and the Kenora Catholic District School Board, local students were able to submit artwork inspired by Indigenous culture that were then handed out and displayed at a variety of businesses on Main and Second Street.

The artwork will be displayed until June 24, if you don’t have time to enjoy it today.

'Not protective': Early bodychecking doesn't prevent hockey injuries, study finds

Introducing young hockey players to bodychecking at an early age doesn't protect them from injury as they move into older, harder-hitting leagues, new research has concluded.

In fact, the opposite may be true, said Paul Eliason of the University of Calgary, lead author of a new paper in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

"More bodychecking experience is not protective against injury and concussions," he said. "The rates of injury and concussion were actually substantially higher among those who had more bodychecking experience."

Full ban on six single-use plastics coming by end of 2025: Guilbeault

The federal government is banning companies from importing or making plastic bags and takeout containers by the end of this year, from selling them by the end of next year and from exporting them by the end of 2025.

The move will also affect most single-use plastic straws, as well as all stir sticks, and cutlery. Six-pack rings used to hold cans and bottles together will get slightly more time before the ban affects them, with June 2023 targeted for stopping production and import, and June 2024 to ban their sale.

Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Kenora and Sioux Narrows

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Kenora, Grassy Narrows, Whitedog, Sioux Narrows, Nester Falls, and Morson. 

Environment Canada is warning of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts of 90 to 110km/h, large hail and heavy rain. 

Storms are predicted to begin in the early evening. 

A few severe thunderstorms are expected to develop early this evening. Strong wind gusts, large hail and locally heavy downpours are the main threats with these thunderstorms.

27-year-old heat record broken in Kenora

Northwestern Ontario’s recent heat wave has broken a 27-year-old record for the Kenora area, and another record could be broken later this afternoon.

Environment Canada says Sunday’s high of 33 degrees Celsius in Kenora was the warmest June 19 on record dating back to 1995, when the record was set at 31.8 degrees.

“We did get up to 33 degrees yesterday, breaking that record. In terms of the heat and humidity, there’s one more day to go, and it’s already 28 or 29 degrees in the Kenora area,” notes Meteorologist Geoff Coulson.
