Red Lake woman deceased following accident on Hwy 11

A Red Lake woman has passed away following a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 11. 

On August 19, 2022, at approximately 6:50 p.m. the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Greenstone Detachment along with Superior North Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a report of a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 11 between Longlac and Highway 631.

The vehicle was traveling westbound when it left the roadway. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the second occupant of the vehicle was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Firearm and drug charges laid in Atikokan after altercation

Members of the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged an individual with weapon-related charges following an investigation.

On August 21, 2022 at approximately 8:34 a.m. officers received a report of an altercation taking place between two people at a residence on Rawn Road in the Town of Atikokan.

Officers attended the scene and confirmed that an altercation took place and escalated to one of the involved people pointing a firearm at the other person.

Lawrance acclaimed Sioux Lookout mayor, candidates announced

The list of candidates for the Sioux Lookout municipal election has been announced and, being the only person to file his papers, Doug Lawrance has been acclaimed mayor. 

This will be Lawrance's third term in office after defeating former mayor Dennis Leney in 2014. 

Running for council are current councillors Joe Cassidy, Cory Lago and Joyce Timpson. They will be up against Reece Van Breda, Joan Cosco, Dan Rioux, Brent Wesley, Luc Beaulne and Manuela Michelizzi. Six seats are offered for council.

Slower forest fire season welcome after last year

The 2022 forest fire season has been quiet when compared to the record-breaking forest fire season we lived through last year.

In 2021, the province saw a record 1180 fires reported that burned well over 770,000 hectares. Crews with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry spent a brutal summer working to slow the fire's advancement while several communities, including Red Lake and Wabaseemoong Independent Nation, were put on evacuation notice.

Ukraine investigating 28,000 Russian war crimes, including child deaths: ambassador

Ukraine's ambassador to Canada says her country is investigating more than 28,000 suspected war crimes, including the killing of 373 children by Russian forces. 

Ambassador Yulia Kovaliv says the crimes being documented and probed, with help from Canadian investigators, include the kidnapping of children taken to Russia, and the murder of fleeing civilians. 

"What we want to do is to properly document each and every crime and we will bring Russia to justice," she said in an interview, during which she was called by Ukraine's prosecutor general about the issue. 

Some residents sick with food poisoning following Rhythm on the Range

Several area residents have reported symptoms consistent with foodborne illness, commonly called food poisoning, following Rhythm on the Range in Dryden over the weekend.

The Northwestern Health Unit says at least 10 people have reported symptoms consistent with food poisoning and says the investigation is ongoing but suspects that the illness is associated with macaroni and cheese sold by a food vendor without a permit.

Shake-up in Dryden council expected following election

Residents of Dryden will see a big change when it comes to mayor and council after the upcoming election. 

A new mayor will be elected as Greg Wilson announced earlier this year that we won't seek re-election as he is stepping back from municipal politics to spend more time with his family and his business.

Current Councillor Shayne MacKinnon put forth his papers for mayor. He will be in the running against Jack B. Harrison. 

Machin releases list of certified candidates for municipal election

The Municipality of Machin has released the list of certified candidates what will vie for a seat in office in the upcoming election. 

Current Mayor Gord Griffiths has put his name into the hat once again as he seeks re-election. Joining him in the race is current councillor and former mayor Garry Parkes. 

IISD Experimental Lake Area receive major funding

The IISD Experimental Lake Area has received $11.7 million, over the next five years, from the Government of Canada through the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) Major Science Initiatives Fund.

“This funding is essential to driving forward our research on threats to Canada’s precious fresh water—from microplastics to drugs in our water and much more,” said Richard Florizone, IISD’s President and CEO in a prepared release.
