The first round of the Western Hockey League’s Prospects Draft unfolded on Wednesday night and Lanigan’s Kash Elke was selected in the first round (18th overall) by the Moose Jaw Warriors. 

This past season, Elke was the captain of the U15 AA Humboldt Broncos, leading the team in goals (33) and in points (66).  

He also played six games with the Tisdale Trojans of the Sask. U18 AAA Hockey League and picked up four points (2G-2A) and appeared in a pair of playoff games. 

With the summer heat blazing, the Humboldt Broncos began the preparation for the 2025-26 season as they held their spring camp on the weekend at the Elgar Petersen Arena.  

Over 130 players attended the camp, travelling as far as British Columbia and the United States as they all try to make an impression on the Broncos coaching and scouting staff.  

In just a couple of weeks, Jason Holtvogt and others will once again take on one of the most grueling endurance challenges out there once again, the 4x4x48 ultra-marathon. Running four miles every four hours for 48 hours straight, Jason isn’t doing it for medals or records — he’s doing it to raise money and awareness for diabetes research, a cause that holds deep personal significance. 

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating an RCMP in-custody death that occurred in Melfort on Tuesday, May 6.  

Melfort RCMP were summoned to a report of 44-year-old man disturbing the peace at a residence on Bemister Avenue West at 9:00 am.  

Police discovered the man who had broken the front window of the residence.  

It will be a social mixer for the entire community of Watson tonight.  

Everyone is invited to attend a meet and greet barbecue at the Civic Centre beginning at 5:30. Citizens will have the chance to meet the town’s council, community clubs and fellow residents.  

Free smokies will be available for everyone.  

It was a dominating start to the season for the Marysburg Royals.  

They opened the year with a 10-0 win over the Saskatoon Dodgers. 

Cole Bauml led the way offensively, with five RBIs on three hits. Bauml had a pair of doubles along with a single.  

Marysburg had 12 hits with Bauml, Nick Anderson, Curtis Strueby, and Carter Frerichs had multiple hits.  

Plan accordingly if you’re travelling on Highway 5. 

Construction work resumed on the road on Tuesday. 

Drivers can expect long delays; however, alternative routes are available such as Highways 41, 27 or Highway 316, 16 and 2. 

Starting next week, the ice inside of the Elgar Petersen Arena will begin its short offseason. 

At the conclusion of the Humboldt Broncos Spring camp this weekend, work will begin to remove the ice surface from the arena to allow for the summer activities inside of the facility. 

Director of Community and Leisure Services Mike Ulriksen says that removing the ice has developed into a simpler task.  

Wadena RCMP are trying to track down individuals that are responsible for stealing a truck in the area. 

On Tuesday (April 29), the RM of Insinger building was broken into.  

Three individuals stole a blue 2008 Ford F350 with a red sliptank in the back, with a SK license plate 054 LYZ. 

Items were taken from the building as well.  

It won't be a be a break from the rink over the next couple of months for three local female hockey players. 

Nova Langevin (Humboldt), Reece Thiemann (St. Gregor), and Venessa Hering (Bruno) will be spending a portion of the offseason back on the ice after they were selected to Team Saskatchewan’s Elite Female Hockey Program.
