"Really exciting to see," first fully operational and open Christmas season at Meridian Exhibition Centre

With the Christmas season in its final days, the City of Winkler is celebrating a successful month of events at the Meridian Exhibition Centre. Mayor Henry Siemens noted this was the first holiday season the facility was fully open, and operational, with no public health order restrictions in place.

Portage-Lisgar M.P. presents constituents with Queen's Platinum Jubilee medallions

Nearly four dozen individuals from across the region were presented with Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee medallions at a ceremony at the Carman Legion held on Sunday. Portage-Lisgar M.P. Candice Bergen hosted the event, and personally presented a medallion and pin to each of the recipients in attendance. The recipients were nominated by family, friends and organizations for their public service and personal sacrifice.

Hot, humid, and (maybe) stormy start to week

We’re starting the week hot and humid, with highs Monday in the upper 20s, and it feeling like 30 or more thanks to high humidity. 

"Moisture rich air from the Gulf of Mexico is getting pulled into Southern Manitoba today, and that’s kicking off the week with temperatures in the 25 to 28 range, with the Humidex between 31 and 33. It’s also providing the fuel for potential severe thunderstorm development this afternoon and this evening," said CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner.

Winkler Police ticket noisy drivers

Among a number of files opened over the past couple of weeks, Winkler Police officers issued several tickets related to excessive noise from vehicles driving in the community.

On May 20th, a $237 ticket was issued to a person for making unnecessary noise as they slowly drove along Chevy Drive repeatedly revving the vehicle's engine.

May 21st, while monitoring traffic on Main Street, officers noted a driver rapidly speeding up from an intersection. 

The truck's exhaust was excessively loud, and upon seeing the police, the driver of the truck slowed down. 

Highway closures continue as Red River crest approaches

With the the Red River crest between Emerson and Letellier expected some time between Saturday and Monday, there remains numerous highway and rural closures throughout the region. The most recent Provincial Road to close in the region is PR 243 between Emerson and Gretna, which took effect Wednesday evening Local traffic is still being allowed on the stretch of gravel road which has water over it in spots.

Deadhorse Creek spilling its banks in Morden

The Deadhorse Creek in Morden has spilled its banks as of Saturday morning, with water overflowing onto a number of streets throughout the city.

City Manager Nicole Reidle tells PembinaValleyOnline water is over top of the Parkill Drive bridge, and that area of town is essentially not passable at this time. Meanwhile, the Alvey Street bridge has been completely washed out due to the rushing floodwaters of the Deadhorse Creek.

One more snow day for students as Winter Storm impacts continue leading to cancellations

Many students across Southern Manitoba will get one more snow day Thursday as impacts from this week's storm lead to cancellations once again across the province. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for much of the region, with snow and blowing snow expected to continue.
