Frost warning issued for Steinbach

If you are still enjoying tomatoes from your garden, you may want to cover those plants tonight.

Environment Canada is forecasting a low of zero overnight in Steinbach, with a risk of frost.

It says an area of high pressure has settled in over Southern Manitoba today. This will allow for a relatively clear sky tonight, causing temperatures to dip towards the freezing mark over parts of southeastern Manitoba. Frost-prone areas are at risk of dropping below zero overnight for a few hours. Temperatures will begin to rebound towards sunrise.

Winnipeg Public Library announces next Maker-in-Residence

The next Maker-in-Residence has been selected by the Winnipeg Public Library. 

Shivanya Ra is an emerging disabled visual artist, curator, and advocate for disability representation and accessibility. During her term, weekly sensory-friendly drop-ins are open to all.

“My creative journey is rooted in a desire to make meaningful contributions through visual art. Through drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, collage, curated installations, and interactive elements, I seek to redefine both myself and the world around me,” said Ra in an email release.

Elmwood group thanks community after stolen trailer found

A neighbourhood renewal corporation is thanking the public for assistance after their stolen trailer was found.

On September 1, Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal asked residents to keep an eye open for a stolen shed and trailer

The trailer was made by a local group and designed to be mobile and taken on the road to events that bring the community together.

Four teens arrested following armed theft at a Unicity retailer

Four teenagers have been arrested for armed robbery on Tuesday evening.

At approximately 5:15 p.m. on September 2, officers from the West District were flagged down about an armed robbery that was in progress inside the store, in the 3600 block of Portage Avenue. 

Two suspects were apprehended, including one who was armed with a gun. Two other suspects were arrested close by the store outside. There were no injuries reported. 

The Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation after the youths were turned over to them.

First Nations leaders meet in Winnipeg to talk major infrastructure projects

The Assembly of First Nations' annual general assembly kicked off Wednesday with a strong message to government and industry that the countrywide push for major projects won't happen without First Nations at the table.

"We can all agree on this: that progress cannot come at the cost of our rights, our treaties or our responsibilities to the land," Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Kyra Wilson told those gathered in Winnipeg.

Clothes dryer sparks blaze in South River Heights home

A fire believed to be caused by a clothing dryer sent Winnipeg Fire Paramedics Service to a home in South River Heights on Tuesday night.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., WFPS were called to a home on Mathers Bay West. 

Crews found smoke coming from the house. Firefighters fought the blaze and declared it under control at 9:16 p.m.

Everyone was able to get out of the home before crews arrived. One person was assessed by paramedics but no transportation to the hospital was required.

The funeral service for Kenton Schellenberg will be held Friday, September 5th at 1:30pm at Steinbach EMC with burial at Heritage Cemetery.
