Mandatory testing for TB, CWD in effect for 2025-26 hunting season

Mandatory testing for infectious diseases in white-tailed deer, mule deer, and elk in select Wildlife Management Zones (WMZs) is now in effect ahead of the 2025-26 hunting season.

The battle against Bovine Tuberculosis (TB) continues, and in response to confirmed cases in two separate herds in 2023 and 2024, mandatory TB testing will take place in WMZs 37 and 39.

Poilievre's byelection win sets the table for his return to Parliament this fall

After a summer of rodeos, dinosaurs and door-knocking, Pierre Poilievre is now officially heading back to Ottawa as a Conservative member of Parliament for Alberta.

The Tory leader will represent the sprawling rural riding of Battle River—Crowfoot, in the province's eastern region, after winning a byelection on Monday. 

"Getting to know the people in this region has been the privilege of my life," Poilievre told a crowd at a victory party in Camrose, Alta., on Monday night. "In fact, I've had a hell of a lot of fun."

Flight attendants union says tentative deal reached to end Air Canada strike

Air Canada and the union representing its flight attendants have reached a tentative deal to end a strike that began on Saturday morning.

The airline said it will gradually begin operations Tuesday.

The two sides met through the night with a federal mediator before reaching a tentative agreement that will be brought to members of the Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

"Your right to vote on your wages was preserved," the union said in a post on its website announcement the end of the strike.

Heat warning issued for the Moose Jaw area

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a heat warning for Moose Jaw and several surrounding communities.

Extremely hot weather is expected across southern Saskatchewan starting Tuesday and continuing into Thursday.

The maximum temperature Tuesday is forecast to reach between 32 and 34 C, with a humidex of 38 to 40. Overnight lows will drop to around 16 C.

On Wednesday, Environment Canada says daytime highs will once again reach 32 to 34 C with a humidex of 38 to 40. Conditions are expected to cool off Wednesday night into Thursday.

CCA President optimistic they can reach a deal with Alberta Beef Producers

The President of the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) says he's optimistic that they can reach an agreement that will see the Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) remain part of the national organization.

Last week, ABP gave the CCA notice to withdraw from the national organization as of July 1, 2026, citing among its concerns the organization's funding model, board structure, and representation since Alberta producers contribute over 50 percent to the organization.

Local athletes ready for week 2 at Canada Summer Games

A number of local athletes will begin their quest for gold as the Canada Summer Games enters its second week in St. John’s, Nfld. 

On Tuesday, Assiniboia’s Kyle Giraudier and Brady Giraudier will be taking part in the men’s special Olympics 100 metre run. 

Moose Jaw’s Kathryn Rogers will be competing in the women’s 1,500 metre run starting on Tuesday. 

Blaze at landfill contained after five-hour battle

It was a large fire, not capacity issues or zoning that brought the city landfill to people's attention over the weekend. The Moose Jaw Fire Department received the call shortly before 8 o'clock on Saturday evening.

Over the course of five hours, the combined efforts of the local firefighters, city crews, and water deliveries from HF Environmental, the blaze was eventually brought under control.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined; however, nothing aside from recently deposited city waste was destroyed as a result.

Grain Growers of Canada's new chair hopes to keep Canadian grain moving

The Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) has a new chair, elected into the position earlier this year. Scott Hepworth, who farms near Assiniboia with his farmer, moved into the role after the previous chair stepped away from the position.

Having previously been the vice chair at the GGC and currently a director with Sask Wheat, Hepworth is confident they'll be able to meet some of the goals he wants to solve.
