Kinew accuses group of Republicans of pitching 'timber tantrum' over wildfire smoke

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew accused a group of Republicans of throwing a "timber tantrum" and playing "political games" after they called out Canada over wildfires sending smoke billowing across the international border into their states.

"These are attention-seekers who can't come up with a good idea on health care or on making life more affordable," Kinew told The Canadian Press. "So they're playing games with something that's very serious."

Tornado warnings end, severe thunderstorm watch continues for southern Manitoba

Tornado warnings have now ended for most areas, but Environment Canada says a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for southern Manitoba, including the City of Winnipeg.

As of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, there is still one isolated patch of severe thunderstorm warnings southeast of Winnipeg.

Earlier in the evening, funnel clouds were spotted near Garven Road (Provincial Road 213), just east of Vernon Road, looking southeast toward Oakbank. The photos, taken by Vince Chan around 5:35 p.m., did not show any funnels touching down.

On Sunday, the Cruiser began its journey in Ukraine by visiting the Spirit of Ukraine Pavilion at Soul Sanctuary, located at 2050 Chevrier Boulevard.

After that, the Cruiser zoomed off to the Centro Caboto Centre for the Italian Pavilion at 1055 Wilkes Avenue. We ended the night off at the Pembina Curling Club, 1341 Pembina Highway, for the Argentina-Tango Pavilion.

Manitoba Métis Federation turns down Carney's invitation to talk major projects

The Manitoba Métis Federation is turning down Prime Minister Mark Carney's invitation to discuss his government's controversial major projects legislation, saying it won't attend the meeting alongside another Métis group it says has no reason to exist.

The federation, which represents Red River Métis, says Carney's decision to include the Métis Nation of Ontario in Thursday's meeting undermines the integrity of the gathering and puts the government's plans for major projects at risk.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes (31-44) suffered yet another one-run loss Tuesday evening, falling 5-4 to the Sioux Falls Canaries (43-33) in the second game of a four-game set at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Early morning blaze displaces residents in West End

An early morning fire in the city's West End kept crews busy Wednesday morning.

Just before 3:30 a.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service received a call about a fire in a single-storey home in the 400 block of Beverley Street. There were also reports that residents may be trapped in the house.

Smoke was coming from the home when crews arrived, and firefighters quickly launched an interior fire attack. 

Crews searched the home, but found no occupants. It was later discovered that everyone made it out safely before firefighters arrived at the scene. 

Manitoba Museum teaches Anishinaabemowin through online game

The Manitoba Museum is making it fun to learn this summer with a new online language. Anishinaabemowin with Amik is a game that is meant to support those learning the language while also demonstrating the museum’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation through the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages.
