The 40th Annual Saskatchewan Sport Awards Recipients and Finalists have been announced.

The awards celebrate the success and dedication of those in the province’s amateur sport community through two categories, Excellence Awards and Recognition Awards. 

Midale's Keely Shaw has been Nominated by Saskatchewan Cycling Association as Female Athlete of the Year.

Elie Martel, late of Carlyle, SK passed away at the Regina General Hospital on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at the age of 85 years.

The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025 at 2:30 p.m. at the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady, Carlyle, SK with Rev. Christopher Juchacz the Celebrant. A luncheon will follow at the Happy Gang Club, Carlyle.

Tech-Savvy Policing: Estevan Police to embrace Next Gen 911 in 2025

The Estevan Police Service (EPS) is set to modernize its operations in 2025 with several technological upgrades aimed at improving efficiency and safety. Chief Jamie Blunden highlighted the rollout of Next Generation 911 and other advancements.

By March 2025, EPS will transition to a Computer Automated Dispatch (CAD) system, with dispatch services routed through Prince Albert. Officers will have in-car computers displaying real-time call details.

Saskatchewan celebrates steady labour growth through 2024

The provincial government is celebrating as some new statistics show that Saskatchewan's labour numbers did very well in 2024.

From Statistics Canada's data, they found that Saskatchewan created 14,000 jobs over the year. The province also had the third-lowest unemployment rate, coming in at 5.5 per cent compared to the national average of 6.7 per cent.

In total 606,200 people were employed in Saskatchewan over 2024, which is an all-time record high for the province.

Mossbank taxidermy case highlights importance of wildlife regulations

An incident in Mossbank prompted a conversation about taxidermy laws when the Ministry of Corrections completed a routine inspection of a taxidermist in the area and found 144 untagged wildlife exhibits alongside the taxidermist being unable to provide a taxidermy license.  

“It began as a routine inspection by two officers out of Assiniboia and then they quickly realized it was probably more than a two-man job” says Sergeant Grant Robinson with the Conservation Officer Service and Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety.

While in Prince Albert National Park shooting our Moose Whisperer episode for Sasktel Max Local On Demand channel 347 we came across this black bear. It was coming right at us, no signs of stopping or turning away. I kept shooting as long as I could before it was time to roll up the window and make a mile.

Budget meetings focus on Parks Department’s maintenance and upcoming projects

During recent city budget meetings, the Parks Department provided an update on its work managing over 100 green spaces and recreational facilities, including ball diamonds, soccer fields, playgrounds, and pathways. It also oversees mosquito control and wildlife trapping.

The department maintains 16 ball diamonds, three soccer pitches, 11 playgrounds, 22 kilometres of pathways, and 30 irrigation systems. In winter, it clears snow from city cemeteries and outdoor ice rinks, and ensures seasonal washrooms remain accessible.

Fog begins weekend of snow and cold snaps for the southeast

The southeast was eased into the weekend by above-average temperatures, but the current forecast is calling for a few days of wild weather.

That began this morning, with a heavy fog draping itself over the southeast.

EPYC rings in new year with re-opening Olympics event

The Estevan Public Youth Centre opened its doors for 2025 this year with an Olympics event at its 6th Street location.

The event had a number of activities and stations for kids to compete at, with the Eagle Sky Estevan Bruins showing up to also take part.

Some of the other visitors included the city's mayor and councillors, along with MLA Lori Carr who lit the torch to open the games.
