Snow days and safety: How SECPSD handles winter bus cancellations
With the cold weather experienced over the last couple of weeks, it’s a good time to brush up on bus cancellations procedures.
Andre Verhage, transportation supervisor for SE Cornerstone Public School Division, says there are several conditions that could lead to bus cancellations.
“The first thing would be temperature,” he said. “If it’s below –40°C ambient or –45°C with the wind chill, we would be cancelling.”
Road conditions and visibility are also factors in the decision.
Municipalities can now apply for targeted sector support grants in Saskatchewan
The intake period for the Targeted Sector Support (TSS) initiative opened today, offering cost-shared grants to encourage municipalities to collaborate on building and growing communities across Saskatchewan.
The TSS initiative provides grants to support municipalities working together on projects aimed at improving municipal service delivery, governance, and administrative capacity. The four funding streams are capacity building, regional cooperation and municipal corporate transitioning, relationship building, and dispute resolution.
Estevan Police handle hit-and-run, disturbances, and alcohol-related arrests
The Estevan Police Service (EPS) was busy over the weekend responding to a variety of incidents, including a hit-and-run collision, disturbances at local apartment buildings, reports of fraud, and several alcohol-related offenses and public intoxication arrests.
Searchers begin sifting at landfill for remains of slain First Nations women
Excavation and sifting started Monday of a section of a landfill believed to hold the remains of two slain First Nations women.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said he was at the site when the first truck moved a load of refuse from the area to a Quonset hut, where searchers are manually sifting through it in the hope of finding the remains of Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran.
Police believe the remains of the women were sent to the Prairie Green landfill north of Winnipeg in May 2022.
Quiet week ends with busy Saturday for Estevan Fire and Rescue
Saturday was a busy day for Estevan Fire and Rescue after a quiet week with no calls from November 25 to November 30.
On November 30, at around 6 p.m., crews were dispatched to a two-vehicle collision north of Highway 47. Firefighters assisted on the scene. There was no entrapment reported, but one occupant received care from EMS. The nature of the injuries is unknown.

Barra MacNeils celebrate 25 years of east coast Christmas tradition
The Barra MacNeils performed in Estevan on Saturday night as part of the Estevan Arts Council Concert Series, bringing their East Coast Christmas tour to the city.
Stuart MacNeil reflected on the tour, saying, “We’ve been doing this Christmas tour for close to a quarter-century now. It’s really a fan favourite, and we have a lot of fun with it.”
The East Coast Christmas tour, which began Nov. 15 in Vancouver, covers 40 shows across Canada and concludes Dec. 23 in Pictou, N.S. The tour has been running for nearly 25 years.
Warmer system bringing plenty of precipitation to the southeast
Estevan saw some more snow come in over the weekend as the month switched over to December.
However, temperatures will be switching a bit as we'll see warmer air heading into the southeast over the week.
