The Estevan Elecs captured the annual Co-op Challenge Wednesday night at Weyburn Comprehensive School in a night full of intense volleyball action, and some off-court drama.  

The WCS Eagles came into the night trailing in the four-game challenge, with Estevan having taken both matches in the first leg, played in Estevan on October 9th. This would mean the Eagles needed a strong performance in both of the games in front of their home crowd.  

We're now a couple of days into the provincial election's advance polls and electorates are coming out to voting locations in droves. 

Elections Saskatchewan announced yesterday that 60,745 voters throughout the province have cast their ballots on Tuesday. This is about 20,000 more than in 2020's general election, which yielded 41,458 voters on the first day. 

Tim Kydd, senior director for outreach and communications for the organization, noted in a statement that this doesn't include votes cast in personal care facilities. 

A new report by the Canadian Institute for Health Information says 83 per cent of adults in this country have a regular primary-care provider, but that still leaves 5.4 million adults without one. 

It says seniors 65 years and older are more likely to have access to a family doctor or nurse practitioner than younger adults between 18 and 34. 

Access to primary care is highest in Ontario and lowest in Nunavut. 

A Steinbach business, that has roots in agriculture, has made the final ballot for the Best of America Small Business Awards.

Cameron Bergen is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of mode40. Bergen explains they work primarily with Fortune 1000 manufacturing organizations across Canada and the United States. 

"We take data, and we turn it into money," says Bergen, explaining that they help optimize processes through analyzing, optimizing, and disseminating information using software, artificial intelligence, and other tools. 

The Residents of Estevan got to know a bit more about their candidates ahead of the provincial election, with all five of them making an appearance at the Estevan Chamber of Commerce's All-Candidates Forum.

That included Lori Carr from the Saskatchewan Party, Andrew Cey from the Saskatchewan United Party, Billy Patterson from the Saskatchewan Green Party, Phil Smith from the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party, and Phillip Zajac from the Buffalo Party of Saskatchewan.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told his MPs Wednesday that he would reflect on what they had to say in a three-hour caucus meeting where some Liberals confronted him about his leadership.

Trudeau was smiling when he left the meeting on Wednesday afternoon, and as he walked briskly past a horde of reporters on Parliament Hill he said only that the Liberal party is "strong and united."

With temperatures dipping down into negative numbers every night the season is starting to feel closer and closer to the usual winter chill.

After a warmer season leading up to the fall, the temperatures have been above the seasonal average.

Christ Climenhagen, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says this week that the situation is likely to change.

1944 - 2024

With broken hearts, Helen's family announces that she peacefully passed away surrounded by their love, at the Regina General Hospital on October 19, 2024 at the age of 80.

The Memorial Service for Helen will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Estevan, with Pastor Ryan Dittmann officiating. Interment will follow in Souris Valley Memorial Gardens.

Estevan may have seen the last rain in what has been a dry October with a system coming through the early morning hours on Tuesday.

That system came down while temperatures were close to freezing, but avoided turning into freezing rain or snow.

Moving to a new community is difficult at best. A southeast organization is hoping to make that process easier.

Southeast Advocates is an organization that operates out of Estevan and Weyburn to help newcomers and their families get settled in the southeast. Cali-Marie Mack is the Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) coordinator for Estevan. She works with schools around the city to help students and their families get their life started in the community.
