It's been a busy week out in the field as farmers continue to work on getting this year's crop in the ground.

Manitoba's weekly crop report shows the provincial crop is now 32 per cent seeded.

Oilseed Specialist Sonia Wilson puts together the weekly crop report, updating seeding progress around the province.

She says cereals (spring wheat, oats, and barley) had the biggest jump over this past week, adding that seeding is pretty much completed in the southwest, central, eastern, and Interlake regions.

"We also saw a major jump in corn planting as everything was going in for central, eastern, and Interlake. We are expecting that those earliest acres are going to start emerging about next week. Now in terms of oilseeds, we have seen a bit of canola go in its just kind of started in most regions. In terms of other oilseeds, sunflowers are about halfway seeded in most regions, and flax as well in central and Interlake regions. "

She notes field peas are probably the furthest along of all crops. They are almost finished in all regions other than the Northwest, which is sitting at about 65% seeded. Soybeans have just started.

"I think there's some producers that are potentially putting in soybeans ahead of canola just with the moisture that we're looking at right now. And then also a couple reports of dry bean acres in the central region having gone in.”

Over the last week, rainfall has been minimal, with about 10 to 20 millimetres in the central and southwest regions, which has led to a drier start to the season, but more rain is in the forecast.

Crop highlights:

Cereals - Winter wheat and fall rye survival is average to above average. Spring wheat, oat, and barley seeding is nearly complete in several regions. Corn planting has significantly increased, with early acres expected to emerge soon.

Oilseeds - Canola seeding has just started, while sunflowers and flax are halfway seeded in some regions.

Pulses & Soybeans - Field peas are nearly finished seeding, with Northwest at 65% complete. Soybean seeding is 25% complete across the province.

Forages & Livestock - Corn silage planting is underway, and hay supplies are adequate. Grass growth is improving, but caution is advised for early pasture turnout.

Regional Comments

Southwest - Strong winds and high temperatures are drying topsoil; winter crops are in good condition. Spring wheat seeding is 60-65% complete, with corn at 15-20%. ?

Northwest - Spring seeding is progressing quickly, with wheat and peas at 50-70% complete. Wildfires are a concern, with fire bans in place.

Central - Significant progress in seeding cereals and peas; winter wheat survival is good at 80-90%. Weeds and pests are emerging but not yet a major concern.

Eastern - Wheat seeding is 90% complete, with corn at 90% and soybeans at 60%. Strong winds are affecting soil conditions.

Interlake - Soil moisture is depleting; most spring cereals are 80-90% complete. Canola seeding is at 25%, and soybean seeding is 40% complete.
