After her party won a majority government in the New Brunswick election on Monday, Liberal Leader Susan Holt thanked all the women who came before her.

Flanked by her three young daughters on stage in Fredericton, Holt, the first female premier-designate in New Brunswick history, delivered a bilingual victory speech that paid tribute to female trailblazers in provincial politics.

The 47-year-old former business advocate and public servant led the Liberals to victory after a 33-day campaign, thwarting Blaine Higgs’s bid to secure a third term as Tory premier.

Liberal MP Sean Casey is the first to publicly confirm that he has signed a letter calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign, arguing it would be in the best interests of the country to let someone else take the reins. 

As an internal revolt brews, few Liberal MPs who are not in the cabinet are publicly defending the prime minister. The upcoming caucus meeting on Wednesday appears to present the most serious challenge to Trudeau's leadership to date.

Three Manitoba Junior Hockey League teams are in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings. The Selkirk Steelers (11-3) have dropped from number three to number nine. The Steinbach Pistons (7-2-1) fell from nine to 12. The defending Turnbull Cup champion Winkler Flyers (7-3), who were unranked last week, are number 13. The Central Canada Hockey League's Rockland Nationals (12-0) remain the number one ranked team in the country. 

Habitat for Humanity volunteers and construction crews have been working hard all summer and into the fall season to use these beautiful days to their advantage to complete another new home.

The Habitat chapter in Virden started their most recent home build this past May and the special key ceremony with their new homeowners took place this past weekend.  This week the family is moving into their new home.

Farmers in Manitoba are being called upon to aid critical research aimed at improving wheat production amid changing climate conditions. 

The University of Manitoba's "Mani Wheat Project," led by Dr. Cristina Rosell’s food science group, is gathering wheat samples from farmers to study the effects of pre-harvest sprouting, a significant issue caused by excessive rain and humidity before harvest.

Ally Neufeld of Boissevain was recognized as our province's 16U Female Player of the Year at the 2024 Baseball Manitoba Awards Banquet held Saturday night in Brandon. 

Neufeld was an impact player for the 18U AA Brandon Knights and the 16U Girls Provincial Team effectively handling centerfield, first base and time on the mound.

Destination Canada recently announced the launch of Field to Fork, a Saskatchewan-Manitoba agritourism project, which will include the city of Brandon and surrounding area.

The Manitoba government, in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police, is assisting the City of Dauphin in addressing crime by using funds from the Criminal Property Forfeiture Fund to help install 15 additional CCTV cameras, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe announced today.

BRHC Emergency Department Ramp Construction Will Limit Traffic Flow

The Brandon Regional Health Centre (BRHC) Emergency Department exit ramp will be down to one lane only for vehicles and ambulances leaving this area beginning Tuesday, October 22.

There will be no parking on the ramp for anyone.

Emergency department drop-off and pick-up are still accessible; however, there is no parking or waiting due to limited space.

Do not park in front of or block the ambulance bays.

For Monday, October 21, 2024 crop residue burning is AUTHORIZED from 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM in all municipalities in the WESTLAKE/INTERLAKE ZONE and the SOUTHWEST and the NORTHWEST ZONES.
