History and tradition on display as Manitoba RCMP recognizes Change of Command

While the new Commanding Officer of the Manitoba RCMP took the office in May 2024, a ceremony steeped in history and RCMP tradition took place on October 17, 2024, at Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site, to mark the symbolic passing of command from one Commanding Officer to the successor.

Zelma Fehr, 89, of Winkler formerly of Kronsthal, passed away Thursday, October 17th at her residence. She is survived by 3 daughters, 2 sons, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Henry. 
The celebration of life for Zelma Fehr will be held Tuesday, October 22nd at 11am at Winkler Mennonite Church with private burial prior to the service at Kronsthal Cemetery. 
Viewing will be at Wiebe Funeral Home, Winkler Monday, October 21st from 1 to 6:30pm. 

AFN vote on $47.8B child welfare reform deal doesn't pass after lengthy debate

First Nations chiefs have voted to reject a landmark $47.8-billion child welfare reform deal, reached in July with the Canadian government. 

At a special chiefs assembly in Calgary hosted by the Assembly of First Nations, 267 out of 414 chiefs voted against a resolution in support of the deal after a lengthy debate that at points was emotionally charged as they argued either for or against it.

Deer browsing biggest challenge for Melita area test plots

Western region farmers were pleased to see the strong yield with their soybeans this fall, landing anywhere between 35-60 bushels to the acre, and averaging about 45 bu/acre.

"Just hot off the press here, I just calculated our yield results of our variety trials, and it is a pleasant yield, I don't know if it would be our record-breaker, but certainly it will pay the bills and maybe a little bit more," shares Scott Chalmers, Applied Research Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture. 

Sports Update - Friday, October 18th

The Virden Oil Capitals dropped a 4-1 decision to the defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champion Winkler Flyers at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Rhylan Baxter had the lone goal for the Caps who outshot the Flyers 39-27.


The Manitoba Moose assigned forward Carson Golder to the organization’s ECHL affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals. Golder, 21, posted six points in 14 games with the Moose during the 2023-24 AHL season. He also recorded 28 points in 32 games with Norfolk.

Canadian Grain Commission dipping into surplus to keep fees steady

The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is going to be reaching into its surplus for the first time in a while in order to cover its cost.

That comes as grain volumes are falling for Canada, and the commission needs more funds to keep up with their costs.

That's why they're dipping into their surplus, with Head Commissioner David Hunt explaining that came from their most recent financial review.

Russell RCMP lay charges in illegal bison hunt

On October 14, 2024, at approximately 1:55 pm, Russell RCMP received a report of 6 bison having been shot and removed from a farm property, located in the RM of Russell-Binscarth.

Officers attended and met with the victim who advised he noticed the locks to the gates of his pasture were removed and replaced with locks that did not belong to him. A further check of the pasture revealed that 6 bison were missing.
